What commands does your dog know? What words do you use for these commands? What are your future commands?
Below is a list I compiled for Carlin. Most of these have hand signals, and the hand signals are much more reliable than words (proofing is something I need to work on).
- SIT
- DOWN
- WAIT
- COME
- PLACE (go between my legs)
- TARGET (go to the touch pad)
- STICK EM UP (sit pretty)
- BANG (play dead)
- CRAWL
- FIND IT
- AROUND (go around an object)
- PAW (touch my fist with your paw)
- TOUCH (touch my hand with your nose)
- HIGH FIVE (rear up and hit my hand with both paws)
- GO (move forward, run)
- OK (release no reward)
- YES (his marker word)
- GOOD (duration marker)
- JUMP
- OFF (get off whatever you are on, ie table, log, bed, etc)
- ON (climb/jump onto whatever I point at)
- OPEN (open the door to your crate)
- CRATE
- BE GOOD (settle)
- FIND CLAIRE (my girlfriend)
- GET YOUR TOY
- BACK UP
- BARK
- STAND
- WATCH (make eye contact with me)
- CATCH
- OUT
- LEAVE IT
- MUZZLE (he sticks his face into the muzzle)
- CAR (get into the car)
- GO SAY HI (meet a stranger then come back for a treat).
We are also working on HEEL and SPIN (hand signal down pat, but working on adding the verbal command).
Future commands will hopefully include CLOSE (pull his crate door shut), HANDSTAND, ROLL OVER, and BOW.
I'm curious to see what words people use for different commands!

Nice list, John!
Are you working on moving to verbal (away from signals)?

Thanks Connie. The obedience really helped us get through most of his reactivity towards strange men, so we just kept learning new things!
I am trying to work on solid verbal commands. I would say that if he is engaged and motivated for training, I can get those commands with hand signals+ words 95% of the time. It's probably at 90% with hand signals alone, and maybe 80% with words alone (obviously with some intra-command variation; his strongest verbal commands are OUT (he LOVES outing since he knows he gets his toy back), DOWN, and STAND. His most un-reliable verbal commands are CRAWL and BANG (these ones really need the hand-verbal pairing at this point).
Interestingly (and I may be mis-interpreting this), he has a sensitive butt, so I don't think he likes sitting very much, as he always prefers to DOWN and pretend that's what he heard (but with a NOPE he corrects himself into a sit without me repeating SIT).

Just checking ..... no hip or spine problems (the "sit" reluctance)?
Wanted to add that you obviously did a good job with his "out" !
I hope we get more discussion on this.

None as far as I am aware, but he does need to go to the vet for his adult rabies booster this week, so I will check.
I know that in his past his rear-end was very bruised from (what they think) was hard beatings, and I don't know if this matters but his butt-hole is very big (comparatively) and he often licks it almost excessively. Of all the places that dogs tend to be sensitive (ears, tails, legs, paws, etc), that is the only place he is really sensitive about, I can pull or BITE or prod any of the "traditionally" sensitive areas, with no reaction. But get a finger near his butt and he wants nothing to do with it. He has always been like this, so I never really put much thought in it until now.
I'll be sure to ask the vet.

Ohhh, so besides beatings maybe he had constipation and/or hemorrhoids. Poor guy.
He sure has moved on .... one of the many miracles of dogs!
BTW, I'm thinking that "crawl" is challenging for many dogs and their handlers.

He is lazy, I captured it I now use a pair of walking fingers as the hand signal, but you are right, it is challenging to fade that away!
