I have the first Andrew Ramsey DVD, and it's great. However, I fell that it is all "how" and not much "why." I like to know more about the theory, history, etc as well as modern training techniques etc.
Is there a recent book (last few years) that you recommend? One of the reason I really like all the ME work is that he explains WHY everything is done (as well as the results of other training styles, the result of mistakes, etc).
Nice article David. When I was in SAR with my older GSD this was what we did a lot of work on. Amazing how scent can fool you AND a dog if you don't understand all the temperatures, humidity, hills, valleys, sunrise, sunset, etc.
Thanks guys. I have Scent and the Scenting Dog by Syrotuck, so I'm looking more for the why and how of training for detection. At this point I don't have any very specific questions.

Off leash, open area search can be grueling on the dog if your search pattern is not systematic, and does not concentrate on the most productive areas. It's also easy to get fooled when the dog throws a change of behavior, but loses odor.
SAR handlers are experts at this. I learned the most about open area search from an SAR team. I bet you miss searching with Thunder. He sounds like a great dog.
I've had Kipp litteraly barking up a tree during training with the "victim" 30 ft away. The wind caught the scent just right and caused it to pool by the tree. He had followed it in and hit a strong scent pocket so he was convinced the person was up the tree. Another fun place to search is big building with air vents. They can pick up the scent and deposit it in a different area.
