Made an impromptu stop at Arlington Cemetery as we started home today. Also visiting the cemetery today was a group of veterans brought to DC by Honor Flight http://www.honorflight.org/
It was a really moving sight and I think this picture is worth a thousand words
Arlington National Cemetery is an amazing place, full of duty, honor, country. These men and women are the reason we are free. Those who sacrificed all for love of country and man deserve our gratitude and respect.
I'm glad you chose to honor them with your visit, and your post.
Here are a few more pictures. It's just an amazing place. Very peaceful but walking through it really gives you an idea of the enormity of sacrifice and the amazing sense of duty so many took upon themselves.
Seeing the Honor Flight group there was special. I remember how important it was to my grandpa (a WWII vet) to visit the WWII memorial when it opened and am so grateful for groups that make it possible for other veterans to visit the memorials and monuments built for them.
I don't know how I missed this post! Thank you for the photos Mara. Just last weekend I visited the columbarium where my uncle is laid to rest at Great Lakes National Cemetery here in Michigan. You can't help but feel the presence of heroes, like my uncle, there. From the Avenue of Flags all the way through the various monuments. It is my hope to be able to visit Arlington some day. I constantly remind myself it is because of all of those brave men and women, many of whom paid the ultimate price, that I am a free man today. Because of them, I get to spend my life with dogs, at home, training, and anywhere else I choose to go.
We have Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery here in St. Louis. I have been there often to visit relatives and friends who have been laid to rest.
It's an amazing feeling to be among so many heroes.
