Curious to know if there are any thoughts/experiences with using MSM for allergies in a dog?
In the past couple weeks Kenzi has been really bothered with the itchies nothing has changed with diet etc and I bathed her with an anti itch shampoo and retreated for fleas just to make sure that wasn't the cause. She did hardly itch at all the week we were in Maryland, so my educated guess is environmental allergies.
I've started in with anti-histamines and Omega 3s (fish oil) to see if I can find one that helps (even though I know there's limited success with anti-histamines)
But I'm also wondering about MSM. It's got anti inflammatory properties so I'm wondering if it might help cut out some of the inflammation of the allergies.
Any thoughts?

I think it has some benefits, I know people who have used it for allergies in horses but it seem to take a pretty long time for it to kick in, a month or so.
My animals are not "like" family, they ARE family. |

I have & do use it for it's anti inflammatory properties for my horse & also for my dogs... and myself, for the purpose of reducing the inflammation associated with arthritis & other ortho injuries. It takes a rather large dose a 2-3 times daily & usually for an extended period to really see any result from these kinds of supplemental products.
While my female has environmental allergies, I don't know if it really makes an difference, as she is also on a anti-histamine & natural hydro-cortisone per my holistic vet.
It is a pretty innocuous supplement....so I doubt that it would do any harm to try it for a 6 week period (the usual period that it takes to see any results ) & see if it makes any difference.
It might be a good idea to run all this past your vet, just to be safe...especially if the dog is on any other therapeutic products or supplements.

My Yorkie shows the same symptoms during the last few weeks. Could it be dry skin only due to the current weather? My breeder recommended wheat germ oil to help the dry skin situation.

Michael, are you saying that your dog is itchy, or just dry skin?
How much fish oil (and vitamin E) are you giving?
Actually, this would better as a new thread. Mara's post sounds like atopy to me, and yours, we haven't really read enough to lean in any particular direction. I'd make a new thread and include the exact body geography of the worst itch. (Base of tail? Backbone? Shins? Or face and/or ears? Or belly area?)

How much fish oil (and of course the E that should be provided with oil supplements) are you giving?
Long-chain 3s are a more potent anti-inflammatory than any of the glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) for most derm issues in dogs. (Remember that in humans, the histamine receptors are mostly in the mucus membranes .... in dogs, they are mostly in the skin.)
I agree with Anne and Jodi that the GAG supplements are mostly innocuous, and that MSM may have some benefit, but that it's likely to be minor (if any) and not at all immediate. JMO.
Have you looked inside the dog's ears with a flashlight? Any debris? Any inflammation?
What's the body geography of the worst of the itchies?

No apparent ear issues right now - clean with no sign of gunk or infection. Itchiness is all over, biting/licking where she can reach, scratching/licking front legs and ears on occassion. I've felt inflamation in spots on her back as well. Right now I'm working up the dosage in fish oil - at 2000 mg with vit e currently. I've been swamped in general and dog supplements fell by the wayside for several months. There was some itching that start up a month ago, but it was minor and went away on vacation. Got back home and it hit with a vengence There seems to be maybe some relief in symptoms tonight 3 days after adding in anti histamines. But it's also been raining today so there was limited time spent outside.

I've been researching the use Quercetin instead of using antihistamines. There is a lot of info on it if you google it. It's a natural antihistamine and also anti-inflammatory.

It's worth noting that antihistamines are a large category of drugs that all work slightly differently in the body, and individual response varies.
When I took Cinco to a derm vet, he sent me home with a 1-week trial course of three different antihistamines to try, to see which worked best for him. From this trial, meclizine was the clear winner. All of them worked better than Benadryl for him. I've since found that Zyrtec (Citirizine) works even better still.
So it's worth trying several (with vet or derm vet prescribing dosages) too see which makes the most difference.
All work better in combination with fish oil/E.
