Tried to open the Parrot thread but I am on a dinosaur computer. What did he get?
Funny, I was just thinking about a dvd on training parrots. I have had Eclectus, and will be adopting another male Eclectus that needs a bit of an attitude adjustment.
I trim (dremel) the nails on my buddy's wife's parrots. African Grey, Yellow Naped Amazon and a big white Cocatoo with a pink crest when she flairs it out.
I though about marker training these monsters but I don't have the guts to do it. They'd rather eat me alive then take treats from me.
We wrap them in towels and cover their head to do it. By the time I get finished with each one they've chomped through the towel. On actually growls the whole time I'm trimming. I'd be more comfortable trimming the nails on a rabid dog.
The other thing with parrots is that, barring accidents or extreme mental illness with its feather picking and crazy diet preferences, they outlast YOU.
So you've got to really love them, because they are there forever.
When you've had a parrot snuggle on your shoulder and preen your eyelashes and hair for you, and cuddle in under your neck.. they live for that social bond. They are wonderful animals. Just not to be taken lightly
Once I figured out birds could be trained I liked them Now I have a parrot- but one that is quieter and eats less than a budgie, its called a parrotlet. They are playful, intelligent, and one of the smallest true parrots. Oh and marker training does work, as long as your not feeding them the bird equivalent of grocery store kibble you can use millet or sunflower seeds as a reward.
