Hi Everyone,
I got my new puppy last saturday (yeah) When I got him he already had his parvo and distemper shot at 6 weeks of age, he had to be flown in so I think that is why he had to have his first set. So would I just need 2 more sets of shots or do I do 3 since I've read that shots when they are that young dont do much good?
Hopefully I can get some pictures of him up soon to share!!

The Jean Dodds minimal-vax schedule does say that parvo-distemper at six weeks is effective only for about 30% of puppies. (She says 9, 12, and 16-20 weeks.)
If it was me, and the puppy had not been vax'd before, I would follow the 9, 12, 16. Usually the breeder gives the first one at 7 1/2 weeks (well my breeder) so I just do 12 and 16 weeks.
However, if it were ME, in your case - I would skip the 9 week and just do the 12, 16 week. I may be a little tainted though, due to a really bad vaccine reaction in my male, so I am pretty put off by the whole vax thing altogether!
I think if you follow the Jean Dodd's protocols you will be safe.
The 6 wk shot really doesn't do much at all. Most pups have antibody from their mothers which gloms onto the vaccine, covers it all up. The pups immune system doesn't really "see" the vaccine antigen at that age.
We give those early shots as breeders or as veterinarians......I guess almost to make ourselves feel better, should the pup become ill. ("Well, I gave him his shots!") Also, if a puppy comes to the vet clinic for a health exam, it's a good bet he's being exposed to virulent virus right in the facility, so
vaccinating seems like a good bet.
thanks for the replies, I guess my other question would be can we give both the parvo and distemper shot at the same time or should I space them out over a week? I just called my vets office and they acted alittle surprised that I ordered my own shots and asked them if they could give the shots to him since I dont have any idea how. They said it shouldnt be a problem, guess I'll find out when I go in this week. They only have something like a 7 way puppy shot and I just felt that he didnt need all the extra vaccines in there.
I'm alittle confused. I thought the core vaccines were just parvo, distemper and rabies? But I just read on another post that Hepatitis is a core vaccine also? I only purchased the parvo and distemper but now I'm wondering if he needs hepatitis too? His vet appt is at 1:30 today so now I'm worried. The vet does a 7 way vaccine but that just seemed overload to me so I purchased my own.
Any thoughts on hepatitis vaccine?
