My dog, Zak is obsessed and I mean OBSESSED with my cats. He pays so much attention to them. The cat can be downstairs and quietly come up and walk by Zak, and Zak is all eyes and ears and will almost never pay attention to me. He'll slightly pay attention if I call his name or offer treats, but he pretty much ignores me. He also does this if there happen to be other dogs around. This is a huge problem for me considering I'm going to start showing in obedience in May with my 4-H club, and he needs to pay attention no matter what is going on. I'm not sure what steps I should take to make him want to pay attention to me.
Any ideas on how I should correct this?
what you are talking about is referred to as " engagement " . . .
google michael ellis and engagement .
it's going to be a big long process , but until you start on that road , you can forget about your dog finding you more interesting than the cats and even then , it ain't all gonna come at once .
I would go completely the other way and get you and your dog into a room alone with no distractions for the dog.
Teach the dog to "watch me" for a treat or tug.
Add one cat in a cage in the other side of room when dog is ready. And go from there.
Anna, do you do marker training?
That set of videos that Brianah put up are really nice. I've gone through them often.
Every time you give the dog a command and it ignores you your just teaching the dog that it can ignore you.
Because the dog has a history of ignoring you you'll ned to have enough distance between you and the dog in relation to the distraction. In this case the cat. Be far enough away that the dog isn't distracted with teh cat in a cage and work closely over a good period of time.
Every time the dog reacts it's telling you your to close.
Also, check out BAT. Some things they cover may help you be able to read his body language a bit better so that you can catch him before he starts ignoring you.
