These are the kind of videos that really make you second guess the type of people that are "protecting" us. Let alone the type of people who are in a k9 unit. Regardless of the circumstances acting like that is absolutely absurd, police officer or not. I hope his ass is fired, or at minimum on desk duty for a year.

Even the many current and past members of law enforcement on this board? Don't paint us all with the same brush.
Honestly, I've seen worse given to a dog that chewed something up or piddled on the carpet. Is it effective training? Hell no! Does the officer deserve to be demonized? Not so sure about that.

Im past the 60 minutes to edit that post otherwise would. I had a few too many beers last night and most definitely did not mean all of what was written. I am starting the application process to become a police officer myself. So I had no intention of categorizing police officers as a whole. I do believe he should be pulled from k-9 unit as there is no excuse for treating a dog like that. I apologize if I offended anyone.

I know a military handler could be courtmartialed for that. I understand choking a dog off the ball, and have done it a million times, but that was just wrong.
The idea is to take away the dog's air until it has to out the ball. You don't lift the dog 2' off the ground 4 times and hit it with the leash. I'm not sure where he learned this, but IMO, it is wrong. If I saw one of my guys doing this I would take their dog.
The dog handled it like a champ though!
I have no idea why he is even paying the dog on a street find, but that's another topic.

Well, I looked up the original video on youtube (http://youtu.be/SR0GINOPhZw),
and I do have a question for the forum user's in regards to this situation.
So, you have a police dog, probably in high drive, because you just arrested a guy, that is standing with hands on the hood of your cop car. Now the dog get ahold of it's reward (ball).
Why does he have the ball? Did the officer give to him? Or did the dog got it without permission? (we can't tell from the video).
Now, in any case, I have to assume, that the officer commanded an out, and the dog did not give the ball back.
We don't know, how well the officer has his out trained, but it didn't work in this case. How in your opinion, should he approach this situation different from what he did?
And on a side note, a GSD can handle a little choke, notice in the video, that he is still wagging his tail, and probably thinks of it as a fun game.

The dog was not suspended for more than a second or two and the officer was not wailing on him in the part that I saw of the video. It should be investigated but the officer was apparently trying to gain control in a public space where the dog could also have been injured if he took off. I train without prong collars and without electric collars using positive motivation but what the officer was doing is OK with me if he did it to gain control of his dog or prevent the dog from biting him or someone else. If a suspect had resisted arrest he would also have to do what was necessary to regain control. I saw no evidence the officer was out of control or acting in anger toward the dog. A state trooper in NC was videotaped hanging his dog repeatedly for a long, long, time with feet off the ground and choking the dog while beating the dog during a training exercise. That incident was much, much worse and avoidable .. the trooper was clearly angry and wailing on the dog. The trooper was suspended and eventually re-instated.
