(same dog as worming question thread) at http://leerburg.com/webboard/thread.php?topic_id=34159#390718
What does the veterinarian say is the cause of the hair loss? Has the vet made any examination of the dog's feces to see if she has worms?
I agree that you are correct to worry about giving the dog more drugs than is necessary. But it is important to understand what the underlying cause of the "shedding" might be. Did the vet say anything about Mange mites? Parasites?
Other than the "shedding" is this dog healthy? Eating and drinking normally? Behaving normally? Making normal feces? Does she scratch or lick her skin as if she is itching?

I too want more info.
What is the body geography of the hair loss?
Is it seasonal at all?
Is the dog itchy? Exactly where on the body?
Is this dog rubbing her face on furniture or carpet?
Is she biting or snapping at her tail, base of tail, or shins?
Exactly what is the body geography that is bothering her?
Is there any odor to her skin?
Look inside her ears with a flashlight. Is there any problem (dark wax, or maybe "coffee-grounds" wax? Signs of inflammation, such as reddish streaks? Any grayish or slimy exudate)?
Also, we need the answers that Tracy asks for:
"Other than the "shedding" is this dog healthy? Eating and drinking normally? Behaving normally? Making normal feces? Does she scratch or lick her skin as if she is itching? "
He is looking for exactly what I am looking for ..... the cause.
What was the vet's diagnosis (even a temporary guess)?

If they wish to use ivermectin they are thinking that your dog has mange. Mange is well controlled with ivermectin. It is generally safe to use. It takes 2 doses --- one to kill the adults, the next to kill the juveniles.
Did the doctor scrape the skin and look at that under the microscope?

I cannot tell from your posts what is happening. Some of the things that I am thinking are that your dog is just "blowing her coat" which sometimes happens especially in the spring, it is unbelievable how much hair a dog can release when all of the undercoat begins to fall out.
Turning around and nipping at the base of the tail is often fleas, in our country. If fleas are bad they will generally give the dog a run down appearance and they cause allergies, itching and hair loss.
One way to tell if a dog has fleas is to place it on a white sheet and ruffle the hair, or brush the dog. If you see "pepper" flakes on the sheet, tiny black specs, that is fleas. Why don't you try that and let us know what you find.
