My new little guy. He was offered to me a week or so before I lost Kipp. At first I thought it would be too soon, but then I knew I needed something to fill the huge hole.
I've had him for a could weeks now and he's a fun little guy with lots of potential - and it's a heck of a lot better than being depressed for weeks! He was the leftover of the litter since he was the pushiest He's my first pup ever and has got some fun attitude to work with!

Good for you, Mara. It's exactly what I did when Luca died. Within a couple of weeks I found another pup that needed a home. A new dog can't ever "replace" the former one. But channeling that energy into a new pup, changing the dynamics in the household--it sure beats grieving. It's hard to be depressed in the presence of puppy breath. Best of luck to you and this lucky pup.

I know that everyone has individual timing for this, of course.
For me, though, I have always done what Tracy did.
For me, it has always seemed like honoring my beloved friend who died ... allowing another of his/her species to come in and thrive in the same home and pack.
I'm happy for you, Mara. What a nice way to honor Kipp's memory.
I'm a big fan of "getting right back on the horse" when I loose a dog and working with a puppy, for ME is more gratifying then competing at a high level with an adult dog.
Nothing like seeing those young lights go on in their head.
AWWWWWWWWWWWW....... so cute! That face defies sadness and pushy is in the eye of the beholder or the shredded clothes of the handler.
I guess I'm in the minority....it's been 9 months since Thor past and I'm still not ready. However; I did join a Search and Rescue team in January; something I have always wanted to do.
I have so much to learn for certification for me that I am enjoying learning without a pup. I have the best of both worlds, I can stay focused on what I need to learn and I get to play and work with everyone else's dogs.
I look forward to a new companion..... my first working companion...it should be interesting.
You've done a fair a bit of rescue work in the past, as have I. Don't know what it would be like to actually "pick" a dog. Yet if you'd of told me that a Newfound, a Husky, a Shepherd, an Echo and a Min Pin/Chi, were all going to be in my life over the past 13 odd years, let alone what came before and still remains, I could have never called it or planned it.
They come into our radar at a designated time and remain with us when they are meant to. Kolt came to you at just the perfect time for both of you.
A perfect pup (as Connie says) to honor Kipp's life. The training and the skills you learnt along with everything else only Kipp could have shared.
What a lucky little boy to be following in those footsteps.
Congratulations!! To both of you.
Kolt hey. Cute name. Fire a big smooch at that adorable face for me. Maybe aim for 45 over the course of the summer. Looks like it's going to be a sweet one.
