Butch it sounds like you have create a forum or confusion that you like this action. By not being firm or consistience.
You need to decide if you want to harness this reaction and use distraction, toys (or the popular string ball used here) and or tug to enhance this and show him the proper way and items to bite.
Or you can nip it in the bud and teach him biting you is inappropiate, and show what item you like his attention on, like playing fecth or chewing on a toy or treat.
You need to choose which aveune you want to take this spunky pup.
Thanks, Don. I appreciate the advice. You've got it right. He surely is spunky.I'm also thinking that when he gets older and more mature this stage will pass, but maybe not. I thought this two months ago and not much has changed. I know play biting is good because it shows he has significant drive...at least the way he goes about it. I just want to channel all that energy in the appropriate direction. Thanks again for your input. Have a nice Christmas.
Hi Butch,
I deal with this problem a lot.. Dogs can not be corrected with handling such as grabbing his mouth.
What they do respond to is sudden and abrupt action. A very loud and sharp no. coupled with the same movement from you, say your hand. This mimics the behavior that dogs exhibit themselves and makes a very nice correction.
Works everytime... if performed properly.
My 1 1/2 year old female had this problem as well. I did correct it, sort of. On me, she knows not to play bite, but when she says hello to friends she'll get right back into the old routine.
This will make you all cringe! Made me cringe! I woke up this morning to my HEAD in the pup's mounth! Teeth on either side of my temple. I guess when I didn't wake up to the licking he decided to chew on my head. Luckily he's very gentle.

Roz - Are we talking about dogs are Lion and Tiger and Bears, with your head in its mouth?
Gentle my foot or your head! I'm ribbing ya, but darn you must sleep sound.
I'd lock the crate when I slept, we don't want any accidents.
Yes, I am a sound sleeper-or at least I try to ignore whoever/whatever is trying to wake me up! My husband had let him out of the kennel and let him at me! Those two! I had no idea pup's mouth was so big!
my 6 mo old GSD does the same thing, he loves getting a hold of your hand/arm and just holding it in his mouth, sometimes putting alittle pressure on..i say "NO BITE" loud with my hand too..He stops, but then gets frustrated and makes a growl/whine nouse and tries to snap at my hand! I t makes me laugh, cause hes obviously frustraed and wants to play..Right?
