I am going to teach Bak to get the mail out of the mail box and carry it down our driveway (about 400 feet or so) without tearing it to bits.

First teach him to touch something moveable with his nose - I am thinking a paper sticky.
After he does that and gets mega treats - put the sticky in other fun places finally ending up on the mail box - which he doesn't like because it's metal and it's not all that stable and worst of all, the door opens and he doesn't like it.
Once he will put his nose on the mail box sticky, I will put it on the open part of the mail box and then on the mail.
He likes envelopes in the house so I hope he will want to take them out of the mail box and carry them.
Sorry for the length of this but I wanted to list the steps so those who are more skillful than I (about 98% of LB folks) can chime in and tell me what I am doing wrong.
I choose him putting his nose on a sticky as it will work for other training down the road.
I have Pinker picking up my pliers, which have a rubber coated handle. He will bring them across the living room, with cheese as the reward. But he will only hold them in his mouth for a milisecond, he essentially is throwing them, advancing them a foot at a time without holding them in his mouth.
The trouble is he learned this in one session and threw them across the room so fast, so many rapid repititions of pick and throw and advance the pliers that I laughed and gave him a big reward and now he thinks that's the task, get them to me any possible way, even kicking them with his foot.
So, what behavior to mark, now, in the next session I mean, to get him to pick them up, hold them and carry them? His concentration and effort in the "pick and throw" was just intense, just comical in how serious he was about completing the task without having to actually hold the pliers for too long.

I would reduce the distance dramatically (to right in front of me)and concentrate on him just "holding " the pliers in his mouth. Progressively, extend the length of time that he must hold it before rewarding. Only after he knows that he MUST hold it in his mouth, I would gradually add distance to the behavior.
Have these pliers been used around any kind of chemicals? I've stuck tools with coated handles in my mouth to hold them and instantly regretted it. They tasted nasty! Bare metal doesn't taste bad. Some adhesives are pretty revolting. Others aren't bad.
We made good progress tonight but it was still a 20 minute taping (I will propose this as the first one as the actual first one didn't show much of anything useful) any ideas on how to cut that down for entry? Apart from playing at x10 speed?
ETA: He keeps bringing me the toys now. Trying to trigger a fountain of treats! LOL
