Hello everyone, so my dog attacked a skunk last night, even with being sprayed the skunk got the worse out of thencounter. We got home from a walk, entered our gate, took off the leash, his hackles went up then he disappeared around the house. I heard screaming much like a human, thought worse case scenario that someone was in my yard and he bit them.
NOPE!! I ran towards him, and he had a skunk in his mouth shaking the poor thing as it was spraying everywhere. Thank god he listened when i told him to drop it. The skunk was mangled pretty bad, but crawled off before i could do anything.
So now about my dog, he had the spray all over his head, face, neck, chest, and front legs. I have tried tomato juice and , tomato soup. Then remembered a hydrogen peroxide/baking soda/ dish soap mix from the internet. That too did very little to help. So leerburh, what have you used to get rid of the pungent odor? All possible remedies would greatly be appreciated.
thank you, Aric.

PS
Dog is outside (safe, but outside) while you prepare (and do) the de-skunking.

Ah ok, i see where i went wrong. I immediately rinsed it out last time. Just did it again letting it "rest" for the suggested 3-4 minutes and now almost all of the smell is gone.
Thank you lady's!
However i do have another question, should i be at all concerned about rabies? As after re-inspecting the area i found a steady blood trail out back through the way i assume it got in.

If the dog is vaccinated I wouldn't be all that worried. If you decide to go to a vet look up your laws about possible rabies exposure first and verify that you have paperwork proving the last rabies vaccination including the vets signature and lot number IN HAND. In some areas the law is still euthanasia for testing if rabies vaccine status can not be established.

Rabies Vaccine can be established with a titers test if there is no record or no update shot.
The skunk is one of the only, if not the only animal that has no set incubation period. It can be exposed to rabies and go more then a yr before is shows itself in the skunk itself.

He has not been vaccinated against rabies, was going to do that on the 26th of this month. I have done some reading, is it not true that rabies can only be transferred through the saliva of the infected animal?

Just a little FYI - my dog got skunked a few weeks ago and ran through the house.
I had to throw out everything he got the skunk oil on because if you wash it, it spreads and the smell will stay in your washer and dryer and get on your clothes. You might be able to use your bathtub but I was sick of getting the smell off the walls etc.
The peroxide mixture worked very well but his fur is so thick I ended up having to take him to a professional groomer to get all the smell out.

That's true but the law sometimes will not include the option of a titers test.

If you have a blood trail, a skunk, a dog and no rabies vaccination, rabies is something to keep in the back of your mind.
You should monitor your dog carefully for the next few weeks. If his behavior changes call your veterinarian immediately. A change in his bark, sulkiness, depression, agitation would be things you'd want to note.
Rabies is very rare in dogs these days, but it is always something to think about.
Google the Board of Animal Health in your state and see if there is rabies in skunks where you live. See what cases there have been in your region, and if the animal vector was bats, coons, skunks etc. That will let you know how worried you need to be.
