I was just sent a FOX NEW segment that featured AKC VP GENA DINARDO (I probably spelled her name wrong) explaining how the AKC agrees with a study that shows that shock collars cause too much stress on a dog.
It is unbelievable that the AKC has this women represent them. It is so obvious that she is not a dog trainer that has the experience to talk about dog training.
I can't believe the AKC would come out against a dog training tool. Any and every dog training tool can be abused. A dog leash can be abused. A flat leather or nylon collar can be abused.
It is obvious that this women is an All-Positive Dog Trainer. A month or so ago I wrote and article titled THE PROBLEM WITH ALL POSITIVE DOG TRAINERS In it I mentioned that every 100% all-positive dog trainer either lacks experience or knows that they are blowing smoke because it benefits them financially. In my opinion this AKC VP lacks a lot of experience.
Her answer to a situation where a dog is not reliably trained to come when called was - keep the dog on a leash. Hummm - wonder how she would train a police service dog or a S& R dog who happens to be off leash a lot. The answer is the women is clueless totally clueless.
I am a reward based trainer. I believe in using a clicker. But I am also a balanced trainer that is smart enough (because of my 50 years of experience) to know that reward based training needs to be balanced with a distraction/correction phase of training. I wonder what Ms. DESHARDO would have done with the police service dogs I worked on the street for 10 years?
Tomarrow Greg Van Curen will be here at Leerburg to film a segment for an on-line course on remote collars I am putting together. We will film a rebuttal to MS AKC.
Seems we are moving to the European way of thinking a bit at a time. Next it'll be prong collars banned. Before you know it we'll all be subjected to using Halti's, Martingales (maybe) and harnesses. Every dog purchase will be required to include a lifetime supply of clickers and treats....Ludicrous. As long as you have touchy-feely bunny huggers making the rules the dogs all lose. I know police K9 handlers and sport dog guys in the UK that use the ecollar on the sly even though their use is outlawed. All the banning of that equipment did was make criminals out of people. Ed, with any luck you'll be able to change some minds with your video. Good luck.
BTW...the study I read proved that dogs are just as stressed when witholding a reward as using an ecollar on low stim. A fact she convienently left out I'm sure.

RIGHT-ON, Ed !!!
It's all thanks to your "Remonte Collar Training For Pets" DVD from almost a decade ago (still my All-Time favorite) that my Akita and my Borzoi were able to Enjoy the Freedom of off-leash exercise, without the danger of an "iffy" recall -- They were 100% offlead-obedient, because of YOUR e-collar lessons ... And I want to emphasize here that my dogs experienced NO STRESS from wearing Remote-Control collars, and did not even require any "e-stim" in order to be Long Distance command-compliant
And the same is true of longterm obedience results derived from initially utilizing a Correctly Fitted & Properly Employed prong collar, so THANKS again !!!

The E-collars are only banned in Wales at the moment, although I think it is only a matter of time before pressure comes to bear at Westminster, I have them for the Boerboels and would just put bandanas over them if necessary.
Absolutely ridiculous. All new training tools i test on myself. Little bit weird however it gives me peice of mind. In my opinion training collars have come such a long way.
Chain "choke"collar: can cause neck issues, applies hard pressure to trachea and area.
Prong collar: looks bad, very gentle pressure compared to the choke collar. Fewer corrections needed for behaviour to cease.
Electric training collar: sounds mean. Very light stimulation even when on medium-high. Isn't meant to hurt, causes very minimal discomfort. Much harder to over correct or cause harm then other two training collars.
With this being said, i will choose a e-collar 90% of the time.
AKC has accounts on both twitter and Facebook. Gone are the days where you sent an e-mail to the company and nobody else ever heard your protest. I suggest that folks post directly on their accounts. Show the AKC that this is not an area that they want to be making unfounded statements about.
I myself will no longer be attending AKC shows and events. I will not be registering Tanner through their ILP program as I was planning to. There are many other avenues to compete in that don't get involved in this kind of drivel.
The AKC is considered to be an "expert" on dogs. A lot of people will discard it because of the "fair and balanced"(hah!) network it was presented by but many others will point to it as a voice of authority while calling for "shock" collars to be banned.
