I know it's probably not the likeliest breed for this site, but has anyone on here adopted a retired racer? I'd like to pick your brains a bit. The lady who did our home visit for the rescue was a pretty new adopter herself and really didn't sound happy with how her greyhounds were vs the GSD she used to have. It made my husband uneasy about our choice to adopt a grey, especially when she started emphasizing how thin-skinned they are and all the potential for injuries. I'd love info from anyone here.

I've adopted retired GRA Greyhounds, and owned AKC/ASFA Whippets in past decades -- None of mine were ever "thin-skinned" but were all Very Hardy dogs ... Of course their TEMPERMENT is absolutely nothing like breeds in the Herding or Working groups (!!!) I would strongly suggest that you & your husband establish some close INTERACTION with folks in your local Greyhound Club and spend time with THEIR SIGHTHOUNDS before making Any Commitment

If she was expecting a GSD personality she would have been very disappointed. Some lines have thinner skin than others. I've met greys that had constant skin tear issues and just seemed delicate and greys that were very sturdy.

Wow, thank you for the quick replies. I own a 2 year old staghound, Raven, who we've had since she was 8 weeks old. We also had a big mix breed, Sutter (who we finally decided had some GSD and cur hound in him, plus other stuff). He had a more working temperament and was aggressive toward strange dogs, but was completely tolerant and steady with children. We lost him in May Comparing temperaments, though I admire working and herding dogs, I prefer owning the sighthound temperament. It's why we sought out a greyhound rescue.
The skin-tearing is what worries my husband. It made him wonder if a greyhound would be a bad choice of dog in a house with children, and if we would be constantly taking a dog to the vet for stitches. There is no local greyhound group--we are in rural WY and are adopting from a CO group. There are a few owners in town, including the lady who visited us.

all my non gsd are whippet/greyhound/scent crosses. gh form the basis for just about every hunting line here in oz. the thin skin issue in racing lines is certainly the key issue in breeding along with soft pads and fine bones that fracture. there is only one selection criteria in racing on a flat track and that is speed, health and longevity are predominately irrelevant. if a dog only races and does well for 1 season and implodes, it was a successful breeding and literally that line may be used 1000's of times to achieve success for 1 season. breeders play the numbers starting large numbers that will be wasted to get the small chance of one that can get wins. so yr concerns are not unfounded and need to be considered.
coursing lines mainly from the UK are much more robust animals in general and a cross of the wire haired breeds like stag is to make the greys more robust.
not the temperament for everyone but I like them much

Wish I could adopt from UK coursing lines, then . I am in love with my stag's temperament, and her breeder would gladly put me on the list for the next litter of puppies, but I am not ready for another puppy.
Hum.

That brindle and white is just gorgeous. My dad laughs because my brother loves scent hounds (he just bought a bloodhound pup in August) and I've fallen in love with sight hounds. We were both raised with cats and no dogs at all, so I'm not sure how this happened.
I wonder if I would be able to discover which greyhounds available are from which lines and have some idea if it is a lineage that is more injury prone.

not sure how you would do that in the states unless you are rich and thinking of importing. the sight-hound culture from what I understand is not big in the states, outside of the show ring or race track. the pro coyote hunters are your best shot perhaps.
seems all the US hunters I know are into the sport hounds and walk in catch dogs, foreign culture to me, here it is all running catch dogs. if the hunt isn't over within 1k of your ute it's a bad hunt, you guys tend think the more miles the better, I think it is just less drinking time.

I know of a number of racing Greyhounds gotten through rescue groups.
To a dog I've only heard of them spoken of as couch potatoes in the house.
Peter, aren't the BullGreys what the many would call a Lurcher?
I suspect their biggest use down under would be as hog dogs or catch dogs with range cattle?
With the hog being such a serious pest over there would hunting them with dogs be legal?
