your breed (or crossbreed), why is it "the most best and goodest", breed blindness, biased accounts, unsubstantiated claims, cherry picking the data, and outright BS encouraged.
5/6 Australian cattle dog, 1/6 border collie. Most intelligent dog I have ever owned or worked with. When i first got him at 8 weeks, 1 day of accidents in the house. Never again since that point. Great nose he absolutely loves to track game or any animal. I also do persons tracking with him, he's all ways ready to go. Ridiculous energy levels, we jog 5km a day, and walk/track/or hike another 15-20km every single day. The majority of commands only take 8-10 repetitions to learn it, then its just proofing the command from that point. We also dabble in some schutzhund work. Best all around do everything dog i could imagine.
Now with that being said once i find a working German shepherd to fit my needs he will likely become my new favorite. Haha.
My stag right now is the perfect dog for me. Super mild and genteel, a dream to walk on-leash, smart enough to learn tricks, but not a dog that is constantly pushing for more mental stimulation than a long walk, a good free run, and snuggly grooming session.
That said, the gold standard of family dog is still held by my grandmother's Newfie-lab cross. He had an uncanny way of reading people and being friendly or protective as was appropriate. He was the most genuine nanny-dog I've ever met (but oh, I'm glad I didn't have to brush him out!).
can anyone rationally dispute the Labrador in terms of versatility and proven performance across multiple venues over the longest time in the most countries?
You need a reason to buy a new couch and patch drywall every week or two!
You need a reason to take walks in blind darkness at the end of the day so that your dog doesn't bark at the cats all night long.
You need to buy at least 10 new toys every quarter to replace the ones that have been destroyed.
You need to patch a fence or replace a gate on a regular basis because your dog REALLY just wants to prove how much a secure yard matters. Or maybe you need to install fence rollers for the eye pleasing aesthetic.
You need a black eye or 2 just to prove how much your dog loves you!
You need therapy
(exaggerations included)
I think they're a great breed for anyone who wants to think about dogs every single day and get exercise every single day, personally as long as I can walk a few miles without getting tired I could probably keep any moderate drive, pet quality Mal happy (now that management inside the home is de rigeur for us) but for someone who is house proud and and wants a couch potato who will never chew up stuff that you leave laying around.. not so much. Random property damage still occurs, usually by accident or by human error.
