I've found over the years that the best way to tell if your dog is getting enough to eat is to feel him up. (he! he! )
Seriously, do the rib test. Place your hand along the dog's spine and see if you can feel a slight layer of fat around the spinal column. You should be able to clearly feel the ribs and slightly see them under the fur. Puppies do need more food than adults, but they should not be fat. If he's eating a nice amount of food but is not fat and not emaciated it should be okay.
The feeding recommendations on most dog food containers are only averages. Some eat/need more than others. Mine never ate the recommended amount, he always ate less. But I only figured that out after trial and error. The vets are always pushing more food. Don't fall into that trap. Good luck with your new puppy! It's such a fun time!
Dinner: 2 chicken wings; or 2 duck necks; or 4 chicken necks.
As previously suggested, feel your dogs ribs and adjust amounts accordingly. You dog should be very active or this diet with loads of energy... basically, tearing the house and yourself up.
