I feed my guys with the bone.. when they are this age I usually use chicken wings.. and sometimes.. I will take a hammer and beat the wings up a bit.. Usually there are no problems... They need the bone.. you could grind the whole thing up if you like..
If you are feeding wings there are no "large bones" to speak of. If the pup has been fed raw prior to you getting it, it should be all set for enzymes to digest the bones. Even if not, they still digest them pretty darn well as long as they are healthy. If you are worried too much to feed bones you can feed ground eggshells in place of the bones. Chicken necks have smaller bones than wings as well, but I am not sure if there is enough calcuim there for a growing pup. Maybe someone else will know. Puppies are not my specialty.
from experience, my little vacuum cleaner would swallow large chunks of bone, only to later regurgitate them on a choice blanket/couch/etc. at that age I'd suggest breaking the bones up if he's trying to eat them whole.
A similar question...my 18 month old bitch has eaten raw bones all her life. However, this week she chewed a lot off a raw bison bone- nothing unusual there. Then she vomited up large pieces of bones and has had the shits for two days. Any ideas? Might she need some enzymes or? I have heard digestive enzymes mentioned but not sure what kind for dogs. The same kind you would buy for humans? Thanks.
Were they large bones (weight bearing)?? My dogs have a hard time with pork or beef leg bones--they breeze thru rib and necks though but unless the bones are small (as in chicken or rabbit size) I always give probiotic powder sprinkled on them.
Lew (the owner) is great about answering questions if you aren't sure which supplement will work best for your dog. I highly recommend this company....no affiliation with them, just a happy customer.
Thanks, Cindy.
Yes, they were large bones. I checked out that web site and got some of the probiotic ordered. Does it help a lot with the digestion of larger bones?
I haven't been feeding a lot of large bones lately, the largest I feel comfortable with is pork necks these days. The others are so hard, I am worried about the dogs breaking a tooth....a couple of mine (the Malinois and the Dobermann) are such aggressive chewers that they scare me at times.
I do always use the probiotic on pork necks though and sometimes on chicken too. I found that the probiotic seems to help my allergic dog, if I give it regularly she doesn't seem to itch .
It's really great for puppies too, I know you will be adding a new one to your family soon.
