Youtube Video of a raccoon entering my yard, and trying to make it by my GSD. There must have been something wrong with it, or it was completely stupid.

This is a good example, why you have to keep the vaccinations on your pets up to date.

I was at a neighbor's house, when I heard my dog barking. As usual you can hear a difference in the bark, if something is really wrong, like in this case. I ran over, but since I was on the wrong side of the fence, I couldn't help much, but videotape the incident.

I have never seen one of those things live, I heard they can mess a dog up.
dog held his ground good, showed some courage, his mindset seemed typical of a dog green to that sort of thing, ie not sure if dad was going to kick his ass or praise him, it is deep instinct trying to break thru many, many layers of domestication imo. people think hunting/fight/kill is still natural to dogs, it aint, it is a process they have to learn.

that one did seem to be a bit off falling out of the tree and sort of just walking around the home, or is that normal behaviour, idk?

on yr clip the side panel had some clips of raccoons with rabies - yikes, I appreciate my gov more now for having such stringent quarantine laws.

oh yeah pete , those things are not far off a honey badger .
i saw one hanging from a rafter take heavy repeated blows to the body with a hockey stick before it freefell 6 meters to the ground , whereupon it immediately sought another way to get what it wanted .

do not allow your dog to get into close combat with one : they will lose , and lose badly .

Youtube Video but since I was on the wrong side of the fence, I couldn't help much, but videotape the incident.
Camera down, scale the fence, secure the dog. The Racoon didn't appear to want a production, if he did, he would have won.

If a dog plays with a coon, back and forth, I might bite you or I might not, they get hurt, in my experience.
On the other hand I had a bull terrier who would walk right up to the coon with 0 display of aggression, bite it hard, one shake and that was it.
For an inexperienced dog a raccoon can be a serious foe.

This raccoon was small, and I do not think it was healthy, because of its weird behavior. If I would have been in the wrong position, it could have attacked me. The dog was not sure, if he should kill it. At one point he gave me eye contact to ask for permission, that I did not give.
We practice capping on a regular basis with squirrels. If he sees a squirrel, he looks at me, and then he gets a YES for the OK to try to hunt the squirrel, or he gets a LEAVE IT or no response, if I don't allow him to chase it.
So far we didn't encounter raccoons this close ever before. We had a healthy raccoon with 3 babies walking by. Amazingly enough, the baby raccoons are not afraid of the dog. Mother raccoon called one of them back, as it approached our yard. see here |

Unless the dog makes actual contact few critters will engage with a dog if they have a way out.
It goes against their survival instincts to get injured and not be able to hunt because of injuries.

When I did natural earthwork with terriers it wasn't uncommon (with a baying dog) to dig to the dog and a coon, groundhog, etc would be curled up in a ball with it's back to the dog.

No so with a female with cubs/kits.

Last year we had a lot of coons with distemper around here.

Poor little thing -- Small young 'coon out in broad daylight & not looking very healthy ... May have been suffering from K9 Distemper, to which they are susceptible and which is ultimately fatal, after impairing them both physically & mentally
My Akita meant serious business with raccoons -- Whenever one tried to enter the house at night, Shaka would stalk it in stealth mode, with one silent pounce to pin it down, one death grip to suffocate it (no neck-breaking shake) and one kill bite right through the skull at the end for good measure ... All over in under a minute!

But on the other hand, Adobe-She's-A-Dobie puts on a HUGE SHOW to scare them outta Dodge -- She makes very loud Unearthly Noises sounding like three-headed Cerberus guarding the River Styx ... My instinct is that all her posturing is a great deal of bluff to run the critter off, and I don't really know whether she would actually engage one with intent to kill, if it decided to fight her?
