ok so Leerburg was super cool. I had bought the power of food dvd back in 09, now there is a new one and streaming (which is sweet) I asked and they gave me the new version no charge ... so I couldn't help myself ... I bought the Engagement Skills with Forrest & Leash Skills with Michael.
So in the first dvd's there was no prong collar used with young dogs .... now there is. I wish there had been but no biggie now.
My Rotties are 5yrs old now and walk well on leash ... until they see something more interesting than me. Correction & Redirection works sometimes but .. not always. So I want to go back to basics with the leash skills. All the different prongs it's tough to decide which one is really best/strongest and one that won't come apart easily. Tibby is 135lbs and Fritzi is 105. Either one can drag ya down the street if they decide to so strength in the collar is imperative. Recommend me one please.

What are you walking them on now? I'm not sure if the leash pressure work would really be my first choice for dogs that have "selective obedience". The first time they discover that they can still pull into the prong you're sunk. The dog still has to want to do what you're asking for the most part IMO.

We've been using the stainless steel small sized prong collar by Herm Sprenger with our Mal since she was a pup. Before that, for just a few weeks, we bought a quick release prong collar from PetsMart. It was pretty much garbage and failed several times. Since using the Sprenger collar, we haven't looked back.
One thing I noticed from a previous post that, respectfully, I thought I should address. You should not ever be in a position where you're pulling against your dog and the collar is digging into it's neck. With a 90 lb Rottie, you will have already lost that battle. The effectiveness of the prong collar is in its ability to work in applying corrections, not engaging in tug of war.

Except in leash pressure work which is what the Leash Skills DVD he referenced uses. That's why I mentioned it. Otherwise, absolutely the motion should never be a pull. A sharp pop is correct.

I use a Herm Sprenger WITHOUT quick release clasps. For large GSDs, everyone in my circles uses one for medium dogs and buys extra prongs to size it to the large dogs. This seems to make corrections more effective and easier to deliver, and the collar doesn't separate nearly as frequently as the ones with the larger prongs do.
More importantly, I advise you to use a backup collar, specifically the Leerburg DD (Dominant Dog) collar with the Leather Prong collar/DD collar leash. When properly rigged, the DD collar will take the air of the dog if he pulls into the prong collar. The backup collar is also already in place were the prong collar to separate.

a harness and standard choke collar hooked together with one of those removable chain links. They generally walk fine, they like to try and be a 1/2 step ahead of me but they don't drag ... unless as stated earlier they see something more interesting than me. And even then a good verbal correction with just the pressure they put on themselves. When they try and bolt I just stop, let them yank themselves and then verbally NO and they stop. I have good engagement 95% of the time I am hoping I can curb the walking ahead and trying to bolt. It won't take more than a few times for them to pull on it to figure it out. They aren't hard dogs. I just want one that will work and last forever.
Is the Leerburg one as good as the Sprenger? I assume it is or you guys wouldn't sell it.

Duane Hull ... where is the GNO Shutzhund club? Is that the guy over off of Patriot St. (or Ehret) with the kennel? I forgot his name off hand. Or is this another club? If it's a different club I'd like to meet up with you folks. Just to hang out.

That's the same guy... Patriot St. turns into August Ave once you cross Barataria, and that's where his kennel is. The owner is President and TD of the club. I don't want to name him here, butI would ask you to pm me if you have some concerns about him or our club. I would like to think everyone would enjoy training with us, but TD has certainly burned some bridges in the years that he's been training.
There are two other clubs near here. One in Boutte, and you may already know some of those folks, as well. The other is a new club that trains in Robert. Nice group of folks. These two clubs only train on weekends.

August Ave. couldn't think of it atm.
I went there a couple times, was not impressed. Old school methods.
He was working with a guy who had a GSD, beautiful dog but no drive for the protection work he was trying to do. The dog turned his back and the old guy popped him with the whip ... pretty hard, then said, that would make him not turn around again .... that's when I took my dog and left. If he would have done that to my dog he wouldn't be alive today.
It was right after that I found Leerburg.
Robert & Boutte are a pretty good clip away, I only have Sunday off and that's the Lords day.
Anyway thanks for responding. I looked you up on FB .... beautiful dog you have ... nice green trout's to )

I haven't had the same experience as you. At some point, the old guy has started adopting more modern, positive methods. He doesn't do the helper work anymore, either. However, I would believe that he was hard on a dog and handler who didn't belong on the field. I wouldn't assault him, either. Looks can be deceiving. He's got some tricks up his sleeve.
My dog had a confidence issue in the beginning, and would turn her back. The same TD coached me and another helper on how to keep the dog focused without striking the dog. Not sure how long ago you visited there, but clearly something has changed. I know that he, like ED, has become conscious of how dogs and training have changed and is making an effort to update his methodology.
You pbly wouldn't like the club in Boutte, either.
Since he chooses to remain anonymous to this forum, we should pbly keep any further discussion about him in the pm's.
Feel free to friend req on FB, if you wish. A dog lover can never have too many friends. I might even tell you where we've been catchin' the specks!
