I would use this as real-world experience about how difficult and dangerous it is to breed a dog without adequate experience and resources. It can cause needless suffering and death.

That is just horrendous, that poor girl, she must be so distressed and in unimaginable pain, I hope to god your friend has a competent and empathetic vet.
Whatever conditions did she whelp in? Was the vet present?
This is the saddest thing I have read here in a long time

From a guess, a complete guess, I would say that the mother may have another pup inside of her, dead, and that it poisoning her, the milk, the babies.
USUALLY a dog, especially a large dog, can give birth without problems. But when it goes wrong, it goes very wrong indeed, there is potential to loose both mother and babies with every labor and delivery.
In our Church they refer to it as the "crisis of childbirth", and that is no exaggeration.

Best thing I have read in a while.
Just because you read online and have a female dog doesn't mean your adequately informed to breed a dog.
Get the mother and the remaining puppies to a vet ASAP.
If one isn't available, well your friend shouldn't of bred this dog in the first place.
Such a shame.

Either this or retained placentas.
Mom needs to be taken to a competent vet ASAP, with puppies.
Once, or if, she recovers from this, she needs to be spayed.

I have no experience breeding dogs and never intend to. However, if I were ever to make a list of cardinal rules for prospective dog breeders, I would make this set of comments #1.

I just was thinking - and you have in your other post that you are breeding your very own female.
I really, REALLY, think you should reconsider.
You may find yourself in the same boat, and you need to find someone with way more experience to mentor you. This female and her puppies have suffered and died, maybe unnecessarily.
I am not saying that you should never breed, but not RIGHT now.
I waited until my female was health tested, titled in various venues and *I* had the time to research more about the pedigrees and whelping itself. She was 4.5 years old and had a natural whelping with no complications, your female is young, don't rush.
I then found two amazing mentors (and a few others have joined along the way) who helped me whelp my first litters.
I would think it might be time to take a step back and ask yourself if producing puppies for the sake of having a litter is really worth it?
