how can I progress this, started as a front then morphed into a beg thing decided to turn it into a sort of barky & holdy thing. I want to go a full funner bark & hold.
1. The goal is to get the sit up solid with command and the tug as the reward.
.2 Get him to hold a lesser object with the bite tug as reward.
.3 Get him to sit up with the lesser item in his mouth and the bite tug as reward.
Each step should be solid separately before putting them together.
Ror this "trick" I would stop using the tug as a reward for the situp. Once he has the tug the behavior is over and there is no reason for him to hold the sit.
It's the same way I like to teach the retrieve.
To many use the dumbell as a prey item simply because the dog will chase it. It should be just another behavior learned in order to get the reward (tug).
Same with a hold and sit up. He needs a clear path to the tug as a reward.
Holding the reward and sitting up is counter productive in the initial training simply because he was given the tug BEFORE he was asked to perform the sit and hold behavior.
