Hey all got an interesting question. I would like to start serious training with my mal but am wondering what would be a good age to start or does it really matter ?? She knows the basic commands sort of but I Dont want to push it. We do lots of really short almost like games with a bit of sit down stand etc. But should I be doing more she is 10 months old and I have had her for about three months. Thanks
What do you mean by "serious" training? I started training with my pup when I brought him home. He's 10 m/o now and is solid on several behaviors and has a great SAR foundation. Using reward based training (clicker/marker/luring) makes it all fun, motivational work.
I couldn't live with my ACDx w/o training him somewhat from day 1.
I have noticed, though, that the behaviors trained the earliest, when I let him "slack" because he was "just a pup" (heel, for us, for example) are some of his weakest.
I have a bunch of the basics down like sit, down, we do some healing . basic manners but I keep hearing that they should mature more. She listens well but I Dont want to push her to much. So far she seems to never have enough
And she always is nipping me but I am not sure how to stop that.
Usually when people say they should mature more it's for correction/compulsion based training. If you do reward based training with limited corrections then she should be fine with a wide variety of training now.
Super thanks lots of people here ( Romania) use corrections. I also used too but have been doing the marker sistem( this is my first) and so I really Dont correct. Thankfully its so rewarding not having to correct its like they understand everything even better . when I withhold the reward for her not doing it and redo she getts even more ambitious its so cute.
haha, true that, embarrassed to read my own early posts.
been a rocky ol road and pissed a few people off along the way and done/said more than my share of dumb things but I stay committed to self improvement and raising my standard of dog ownership as a continual process of evolution.
