There are a few folks from Chicago in my class. I'll ask them tomorrow about a trainer. Any certain methods you're looking to use or can't stand? Any specific goals of training?

I'm actually helping a friend in that area look. They need a good balanced trainer to help with a 5 month old GSD. Goals would be a well-behaved family companion. The dog's socialization has been set back just a bit by the dog flu in that area.
I'm betting the Chi Town area has a number of AKC clubs.
Many of them are for show dogs but just as many are obedience clubs.
Not that you have to join but they could put you in touch with trainers in the area.
Often times these clubs also teach at civic centers, etc.
That's where I first officially started teaching with NCOTC North County Obedience Training Club back in the early 80s.
I have to agree this would be a great place to start a search, based on the goals of the dog's owner. Like Bob said, sometimes a facility can refer you to other trainers, too, if they don't offer what you're looking for.

For companion dog, and socialization..... Check out Chad Mackin. Works at a place called DePaw University. And.... Has a Podcast on iTunes called Dog Training Conversations. You can hear his gig before you send anyone.
