Hi guys,
I follow Leerburg's advices about adding distractions. Doing this has changed my dogs, it is wonderfull. Of course far from perfect. There are still moments, where I do not succeed, but at least I think to have learned, how to improve this.
What I'm unsure about is how I should react, when going to the beach. The greatest distraction there are the crabs. Then I very often lose eye contact. Perhaps I'm to much concentrated on avoiding that the dogs pull me on the sand with their sudden jumps after tiny crabs, which the dogs see, before I can.
One of the Pits is crazy about digging. She sniffs and if the hole is inhabited, she begins digging like mad.
It is no great problem to handle these distractions. They obey, when I want to go on walking.
Problem: I am ambivalent. I'd like to allow them to dig and jump after crabs now and then, (I don't allow to kill them). Digging and chasing is so much fun for the dogs. On the other hand I'm unsure if allowing this I'm teaching them a wrong behaviour? What is your opinion?

I try to have a signal or cue which tells the dog when they are free to be dogs, and when I expect them to be in hand or working, paying attention to me.
I experience distractions when I am trying to gather cattle and the dogs find a mouse nest, or find something dead in the field to eat or roll on.
The key is you decide when we are allowed to hunt mice or crabs, in your case. You decide, when it's ok to "be a dog" and when the dog is expected to be with you, and in hand.

Yup, teach a release command where they are then free to go be dogs. It's good for them!

I agree with Betty!
When my sons were kids, I didn't take them to the Children's Playground and then make them behave there as if we were in a Church Service -- With the dogs, I let my expectations of them fit the circumstances ... When we go on a Pleasure Outing, they are allowed to have appropriately reasonable K9 FUN

What Betty said!
You set the rules then stick to them.
I did earth work with terriers for a number of yrs but my dogs would stop on a dime If I saw them chasing bunnies, deer or barn cats.

Thanks to you all. So gladly I've made it that way until now, but somehow I suddenly became unsure, because chasing other animal than crabs I never allow and digging only on the beach. But I think it would fun for them if I created a place in the vard, where digging is at certain times allowed.
Thanks guys!

Build a sand box in the yard and bury their toys.
Most dogs love it!

Great idea Bob, I'll do this. It will certainly be fun for them and who knows - perhaps for me too, taking part and playing games of my childhood.
Thanks - Christina

The added plus is the dog will keep the neighborhood cats out of the sand box.
Cats seem to love them for a totally different reason.

I had a lot of cats during a lifetime. We cannot have any more cats because of our age (they easily reach 18 to 20 years), the other reason are the dogs. I'd not like to risk, that a cat would be killed by them. Other cats don't come in here, because of the dhttp://leerburg.com/forums/images/icons/default/blush.gifogs. So, a sandbox will be no problem, for any reason whatsoever!http://leerburg.com/forums/images/icons/default/blush.gif
