I hope this is a good place for this question. I couldn't see where else to fit it.
In my younger days I would use Nylabone for "long" term chewing for my dogs. Now I am trying to find "long" term natural alternatives. I have a Kong that I can put treats or peanut butter in but for natural products I have no experience and I don't want to keep spending 30+ dollars on stuff I have no idea about.
So what do you guys recommend for chew toys. I see antlers (some are split in half others aren't) ram horns and all kinds of stuff.
what are some of your favorite "longish" term chew toys?
ps I do have raw bones but I only use those out doors. Looking for something a bit cleaner or safer for indoor/crate type use.
Nylabones and Goughnuts. The only natural bones are RMBs and if you don't want them in the house (which I don't either) or worry they break a tooth or get a chunk off while you are gone then the options are limited.
My opinion all the dried this and that are full of chemicals or additives or just get chewed up too quickly.
High quality bully sticks. I have always used the Bravo brand ones...for at least 10 years...they are the most natural ones that I have found.
Also extreme Kong's stuffed with cream cheese or natural peanut buttter. Freezing them makes them last a lot longer.
Nylabones are dangerous. They DO NOT digest if a piece breaks off & they ingest it. It can cause an obstruction in the intestines requiring surgery to correct. The shaved bits that they usually chew off pass through the intestines...but the risk of a piece being chewed off..not so much. I had a 5 month old pup chewing on one for aggressive adult chewers & he broke off piece ....I grabbed it & threw both pieces out & never bought another. That had been the one & only.one I ever bought.
Kongs are the only thing I really trust to leave alone with dogs after having a dog who was a gulper.
Tanner would repeatedly attempt to gulp objects until they were finally small enough to go down including the last 3-4 inches of a bully stick. He had an antler he liked that had a tine sticking out that prevented him from gulping it. He seemed to prefer the outside of the antler so if I bought one again I'd get an unsplit one.
Ditto on the Kong. The black, extreme Kong, not the red one, is the only chew toy or object that will hold up for our dog, Bailey, without breaking up into dangerous pieces. She pretty much destroys everything else with minutes.
I think it is hard to beat a shank marrow bone, 4 " section. When the marrow is gone it becomes a cylinder with a cavity that can be stuffed.
Some very aggressive chewers can break bone, but for the average dog I have found them to work well.
I am not a fan of the knuckle "soup" bones, which have cartilage which can break off.
Shank bones are great. I forgot about them since I no longer have young dogs. I only use them with younger dogs. You need to keep an eye out as Betty said some dogs can get really going on them & chip or break teeth.
With some pups the marrow can be very rich & sometimes cause the runs
