As stated in previous post re:hips and walking I have a recumbant bike. This is a different issue. What are your thoughts on the teaching part of this type of exercise. I don't want to put prong on her and correct her and often once were going and there is other stuff going on she has no desire for treats.
So I have been using a harness since it is safe on neck. I don't let her pull (like a sled dog). For the most part she does great but she does tend to want to move forward or backward especially at the beginning when she is full of ennergy. Should I just pull her back and praise...pull her back and praise and use food as long as it works? This has been what I have been doing. Basically trying to mark where I want her. except she loses interested in food as she gets in the groove. Should I stop every so often after good position and tug event? would she know why I got off bike to play tug? To give you perspective on my bike since its different here is the link to it.
nice trike Daniel . . . I've always wanted to try one of those .
I don't think you are going to get the dog comfortable within the triangle created by the three wheels for extended periods of time . not saying it couldn't be done , but might be a lengthy process that the dog might not be too happy with in the end anyway . having said that , she should be willing to come in for a reward now and then during the ride .
I think once the wheels start turning the dog is more interested in herding the trike than anything else .
the behavior I develop is called " follow " , and it means the dog can be anywhere he likes , left or right , so long as he is behind me . find a big open area where you can make lots of turns , mark and reward every time you maneuver without running over the dog .
stop and start , release the dog to run ahead , mark and reward everytime the dog returns to " follow " . I think it is important to give the dog some opportunity to be free ahead of you ( when it is appropriate ) so that she doesn't associate every ride with being forced to trudge alongside for the duration of the exercise .
