I have a 185 lb. great dane who, I suspect, has an issue with his scent glands which started about two weeks ago. They don't seem to be bothering him but the stink he puts off of late is enough to make me gag (he's lying at my feet now--I am enveloped in a cloud of his pong). Any advice? I've never had a tutorial on expressing scent glands so am reluctant but understand that it isn't usually necessary in larger dogs.
Get down on your hands and knees and determine the source of the odor. Ears? Mouth?
Overall skin? Feet? Is he peeing on his own chest, or forelegs?
If it is his anal area, try giving him a wash in that area. If he had a bad fright or just became extremely excited he may have expressed the glands on his own, and leaked anal secretions on the hair around the area.

Washed his back end. Smell is definitely emanating from the anus. He is possibly a bit less smelly but it's still there. He is also leaving small brown marks on the carpet everywhere he lies.
Some kind of leakage issue? Anything to be done do you think?

Anal glands. Some dogs require them to be manually expressed.
Google will lead you to several how-to explanations, including YouTube videos.
Or you can pay to have a vet tech or groomer do it for you.
It might be worth a quick vet check just to make sure there's nothing medically wrong. And if not, the vet can show you how to do this procedure. It's not difficult. But it is messy (or can be).
One of mine requires this (five don't). I do it in the tub when she's getting a bath.
If your big fella is leaving anal gland stain deposits where he lies, it's time for some help.
I think it would be worth a trip to the vet. You can express these glands yourself, but it takes some practice -- and it might be smart to have someone who knows what they are feeling examine him.
In some dogs, a short course of antibiotics might be prescribed -- or a short blast of steroid, or even an infusion of a steroid/antibiotic, like Panalog ear ointment, into the gland.
Anal gland issues can become chronic. I'd get someone to check it out, at least the first time.

Thank you. I'll do that. I've been at work today and came home to find the whole family complaining about his odour.
He is a rescue dog that we've had for three years. He has chronic intermittent diarrhoea every couple of weeks without any change to his diet or routine--one or two liquid poops and then back to normal. This is the first time he's had an episode like this however. I appreciate the advice.
If you learn to express the glands yourself it will take only one time to realize it's best done outside in the fresh air....or the heat.....or the cold, or the rain.......or even in a blizzard.
