I got a call from my vet stating they need my dog for a comprehensive 4 hour appointment. Now you all know about working dogs and I cannot for the life of me picture her with all her drive just hanging out with a stranger in a vet with no engagement.
Honestly I never had a vet do this. I personally am only planning to do shots till year old than not blindly do boosters. I want to microchip her to. I just don't see why they need her that long and for me to drop her off. Not like its surgery.
I am concerned that in her prey drive she starts chasing and bighting anything that moves on the ground like cords, towels, etc and then they get frustrated and are not so nice to her.
Questions:
do they have to have her that long? She is 8 months old.
Should I just say give her shot and examine her or should I just go and be with her for 4 hours and engage her myself?
Huh? THEY called YOU to say they want your dog in for a four-hour "comprehensive appointment"? Have there been some health issues with her that I'm forgetting? What did the vet say when you asked them what this was all about and why they need to have your dog for four hours???
I have never heard of such a thing in many decades of owning dogs and taking them for regular (and occasionally emergency) vet care. I would be asking some very pointed questions of the vet. (I'll be curious to know what the answers are!)
Nope she is in perfect health. I guess its part of their "wellness plan" or check up; who knows. I am working right now and its labor day so I haven't been able to speak with them they talked with wife.
I am thinking of canceling and talking with them about what they want and then figure out where to go from there.
Find another vet...the only time a vet had any of our dogs for a prolonged period of time was for spaying/neutering and when our current dog Ziva, broke her jaw. Even then, the Animal Medical Center in NYC had her for less than 2 hours to evaluate her.
I called them and asked if they had experience with working dogs and that I was uncomfortable with this arrangement. They switched it to a regular 30 min appointment. Apparently they do it for convenience for most people and to run labs. I told them I don't care about labs and am not leaving dog there and they worked with me so I am in and out.
There is nothing "convenient" about leaving a typically stressed dog there for FOUR HOURS! What a crock of you know what. I'd switch vets in a heartbeat. It just shows such a lack of caring for the animal.
You say they switched the four-hour appointment to a 30-minute appointment. Tell me if it's none of my business, but since you opened the door by posting here about it and followed up by saying your dog is in perfect health, I'm still left wondering why she's going to the vet. At eight months old, doesn't she already have her series of puppy vaccinations and a rabies? What is she going in for at this time that would require such a long "comprehensive" visit? Did you sign up for some kind of expensive package deal of wellness visits or some such thing?

That is nothing but a Money-Making Marketing Maneuver called "a sucker is born every minute" Next they'll be telling you that Fluffy Needs a Well Doggie Check-Up Monthly !!! Seriously, my dogs lead Long & Healthy lives by staying away from the Vet's Office when they are WELL -- I would be sniffing around for a Different Vet if I were you, Daniel...
