Haven't posted in a while regarding Willow. She is doing great. It is about that time to keep her comb from the shedding of undercoat. I can brush her and even use the rake on her and she doesn't have any issues with the brushing or grooming part.
The issue is not sitting still. Takes a few brushes and then wants to play and run around. I assume I can train this out of her.
Suggestions?
my initial plan is to use treats(less stimulating than tug) and put a word like wait, easy, stand or whatever and marking that behavior. Basically I was thinking of marking "calm" or a calm stand and start small and work up.
Any tips on grooming high energy dog that won't hold still would be appreciated.
I groom my cattle dog on either a place cot or a bench. He knows he's not allowed to jump off and it really limits the being a PITA options. I also leave his prong on him and active resistance gets a correction but we've spent a lot of time working on handling stuff and he knows exactly what he's being corrected for. Without that work being in place I would just stick him on the bench and do the best I could.
I also keep the sessions short. I do a paw at a time for nail trims and groom his ruff seperate ly since it takes a while.
I have done SCHH/IPO, PP with my dogs as their main jobs...but I also teach them touch pad games( setting several out & sending the dog to them in different orders & lots of "stupid pet tricks" like backing up, crawling, high five, gee/haw (for spining right & left), speaking on command etc for just a few things that I have taught just to give them something else to keep them learning New things & just for fun. I often toss some of these commands in here & there while working OB just to keep them paying close attention to what I might ask them for next. OB can get boring for both of us so mixing it up can give us both a m we break break & some extra fun.
Sorry my above post ended up on the wrong thread. Can one of the mods please move it to the brain games thread. That's what I get for doing this late at night.
Thanks
