7 year old great dane has had chronic intermittent diarrhoea. Had gastropexy 5 years ago but the gut issues preceded that (was a rescue in bad shape--worms, allergy to chicken broth/products--when adopted). Has been on Iams Intestinal Plus veterinary formula for about a year with a bit of peanut butter added and has been problem free for months.
Without any change to diet or routine, he has been afflicted for the past three days. Last night his gut noises were loud and constant. Sounded as though contents were moving through at speed (!) Any insights? Wondering how long to withold food (gets fed 3 cups/meal twice a day) and what to feed when he settles?
Severe worm infestations can cause a lot of future problems, leaving the dog prone to recurring intestinal issues, as may be the case on your dog.
Are you sure he did not pick up a parasite like Guardia which can be common this time of year with the spring rains leaving standing water.
Fasting for a day, leaving fresh water to drink as wanted, might help give the gut a rest. After that feeding very small meals for a few days might do the trick. Not sure I would mess too much with the diet of a dog with his history that has finally been well on it & is working for him other than to decrease or increase it. I sure would not introduce anything new.
With a dog with a history of ongoing intestinal problems maybe a vet visit might be in order. It will become a real health risk if he starts to get dehydrated if the diarrhea continues for more than a few days.

Thanks. Good advice. Am confident that he hasn't been near any standing water. Interesting to
learn that one bad infestation can leave the dog prone to recurrence. The gut music was unbelievable last night.
