Well, we have to ship Lundy back to the breeder tonight. He has had fear issues since we brought him home, but they got worse and then the resource guarding started a month ago when he was 10 weeks old. First it was with a bully stick, then any high value chew toy, and then yesterday when I was doing the guarding exercise from our trainer while he ate breakfast, he lunged at me and tried to bite.
Our trainer said it's definitely trainable stuff, but that it will take some work and time. We don't have time with living down the street from our 5 and 2 yr old grand kids. It's too dangerous for them to be around him and they are here several times a week. We need a dog that is calm and confident enough to not be so fearful and defensive. The breeder is buying him back from us, so at least we aren't losing the money we spent.
It's very sad to see your dream come and go so quickly, but we had to choose between kids and a dog, and this just wasn't the right fit. Thank you Bob, for all the advice you've given us these past 2 months. I've learned a lot about a topic I have never had to experience before.
We are going to be a dogless household for a while and just give it a little time since losing Kasey and now this puppy.

So sorry for you Lori. It is very difficult to deal with that.(I have been there ) and frankly not worth it unless you live on farm or have a ton of acreage & little company. You did the right thing. But it still hurts. Thank goodness the breeder did the right thing too.
You will find the right little guy to share your life with. Sometimes it takes time to find the right match.

I'm sorry, Lori. I know it's a very painful thing to have to do, but you absolutely made the right choice. We went through something similar a few years back when we attempted to add another dog to our family. It did not work in spite of our best efforts, and someone was going to get hurt. Not worth the risk.
I give the breeder credit for stepping up and taking responsibility, too. I'm sure someday the right dog or puppy will join your family.

I'll just echo what everyone else has already posted & agree that you did everything right all along -- Your first & highest responsibility is to the grandchildren, no question about it ... Doesn't make it any easier on the ol' heart-strings; but poor little Lundy is NOT a "happy camper" and needs to be where he is not at risk to injure any kids; then in due course the RIGHT pup will come your way before too much longer.

Good for you , good for the pup , and good for the breeder . . . Best case scenario given the circumstance .
You and the breeder did the right thing . A lot of people would have ( a ) tried to deal with it and let the stress ruin the relationship and the dog , or ( b ) , waited until the worst case scenario happened , with the dog bearing the brunt of the humans bad decision .
Good on ya , Lori !

You absolutely did the right thing and Kudos to the breeder also!
No one should start off with a dog that has issues from the get go.
These are the dogs that can easily end up in the pound because an inexperienced new owner didn't want to put up with the dog.

Thank you for the reassurance that we did the right thing. I am just so sad this morning - sad for him, that he attached to us and then we put him on a plane all night, sad that he has issues, sad that we have no dog now. This whole experience with him caused me to miss Kasey even more than I did before...

I too am very sorry, Lori. I once was afraid to have to go through this. We have a Pit who was very jealous about everything one of my other dogs had. Even if she had the same things, she wanted to have all for herself. Then she stole it and if the other one didn't want to leave it to her she attacked. Fortunately she never attacked any people.
I was lucky to learn how to handle with this thanks to advices from Ed Frawley, cindy and others.
But we were near to searching for a good place for her. I was crying so often when thinking about giving her away. So I can really feel with you. It hurts awfully. But I'm convinced you have made the right decision. You had no other choice.

Sorry to hear this Lori. You did the right thing.Having worked with a Lab that was out of whack, I can say it was more of a challenge. The general public think of Golden's and Labs as the happy, friendly, fun loving pet,no thought otherwise. We all know how the public can be.Managing one not balanced in public is that much more difficult.
