When we hold our puppy she will go into a biting frenzy and we have a hard time stopping her. I have been using a tin cup full of loose change and rattle it and it seems to calm her down. Do you think this is bad for the puppy, and should I stop doing this? I am not sure why it works but she calms down, she does not seem scared of it. What are your thoughts, I don't want to traumatize my puppy and not know it.
I did the same thing with my Pits, when they were puppies. We had bottles and tins with gravel in it on every table around the house and one hanging on each door in order to be always ready, when they where in their high spirits (especially with jumping on people).
It worked wonderfully! But only for a bit more than a year. Later they got used to that method and it became completely ineffective. Then we used the water s, first few times spraying the dogs, now it helps just picking it up. But - like with your cups - we have not at every spot a hose ready. I guess, they'd even get used to them over time.
All this means: teach them as Bob recommends. Do it while they are puppies. It certainly takes time, but much less than if you wait too long. I have not much experience with dogs. But this I have experienced and I wish so much I had begun earlier!

What kind of a puppy? How old? How much down time does she get? How long do you hold her before she starts acting up?
There may be some things that you are doing to exacerbate the situation. Or there may be some other things you can do to teach her/reward what you want.
I mean, if the shaker can works, great. But if you find yourself using it multiple times in multiple situations then there may be some other steps that would be helpful to take.
