Sasha - 5 year old American Mastiff - spayed and overall health very good.
I came home from work to find Sasha's vulva very swollen (picture half a grapefruit stuck on under her tail) and the back right leg filled with fluid. Took her temp and it was 100.4 F which I consider normal. She is eating normally, peeing normally and poops are good.
I thought maybe she had been bitten by something when she was outside so I gave her 20 ml of liquid Benedryl which seemed to help a little.
In the morning the swelling of both the vulva and leg was bigger but still soft and squishy. Gave her another dose of Benedryl and when I finished work at noon I took her to the vet.
The vet has no idea what it is and prescribed antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory. She has been on both of these for 5 days now and the vulva swelling is still huge but now it's getting hard and not soft and squishy like it was before. The right leg is twice the size it was and now the left leg is starting to swell.
I'm taking her back to the vet again this morning but just wondering if anyone has any ideas of what this could be?

Please let us know what this Vet says after seeing your dog again today -- I would want a more thorough Diagnostic Work-Up done ... X-RAY films taken from various angles, at least.
Now they are thinking it is either a lymphatic blockage or possibly a strep infection. An ultrasound is scheduled for Friday and they prescribed a further week of antibiotics.
I'm to continue with the warm compresses keep her quiet.
I don't think anything would show on an x-ray as everything is just a lot of fluid. There wasn't an injury of any kind.
I truly hope it's not cancer. I lost my last dog to that horrible disease.
Sorry I can't be any help, Debbie, as I've never experienced anything like this with any of my dogs, but I'm hoping it will turn out to be something treatable and can soon be resolved. Please keep us updated on what you find out.
Debbie, so sorry to hear about this. I know, one feels so shocked and alarmed when something like that happens to one of our animals. Very stressing especial when we don't know yet what it is.
Like Bob, I also think, it's unlikely to be cancer, it appeared too rapidly. Let us know, please. I keep my fingers crossed!

All fingers & paws crossed here for it to be something "minor" with an "easy" fix !!!
