Hey everyone,
I have a 9 month old GSD male that I am working on transitioning out of his crate at night for sleeping. He's learning his "bed" command well, and he's at the point where he will stay in the crate with the door open when I send him to bed.
The problem is, he's downstairs with the girls, but he'd really rather be with me. So after he's been asleep for a few hours, he's been coming to visit my wife and I in the middle of the night.
Any tips on how to train him to stay in his bed throughout the night?
Thanks in advance.

Keep the crate door Closed
"He's downstairs with the girls" -- Is he is a room with them, where you can keep the door to that ROOM closed ???

Candi, I want him to be able to respond to any potential threat during the night, so I don't want him physically confined. I want to train him to stay on his bed, unless he's needed elsewhere. He's in the main room downstairs.
We had 2 Akitas a number of years ago who were trained like this, but we got them from another owner who had done that training. They were great; we just put a sheet over the throw rug in the living room and down they went. I'd wake up in the morning to my male staring me in the face letting me know it was time to go out! It was at a decent hour though.

Well, my recently deceased Akita did not wander around the house at night either -- No training required ... Our GSD back in the day, on the other hand, routinely Patrolled every room in the home throughout the night (also without being trained to do so).
LOL, clearly I can't help you with this question, so I look forward to others' suggestions

At 9 months and a GSD I'm thinking you may not be entirely successful without confinement. He's still a puppy and wants to check in with his pack. I'd expect a confident 2 year old to be fine but with a 9 month old I would consider something like a baby gate in your door way at night or putting his bed in your room.
I also wouldn't expect a 9 month old to be worth anything other than barking as far as guard dog duty goes.

Your expectations for a 9 month puppy are a bit high on both staying put all night, unless teatheted & a "response" to a threat. (I would not teather a dog that I could not keep an eye on.)
He might bark at a noise just like any dog....but to expect any kind of actual threat response other than that is pretty unlikely unless protection trained. And no 9 month old puppy is going to really take anyone on.
You would be better off with a good alarm system. And maybe a gun if your living area is that bad.
Haha...Cathy &I were typically at the same time with the same thoughts.

Thanks for the responses. Good to know that someone else has had similar experiences with Akitas & GSD's. Also good to know that 9 months is pretty young for this (staying put all night).
So, as he gets older, should I expect him to naturally stay in his bed? What training can I be doing with him now to help encourage that?
Regarding his response, barking is fine for now. I'll take care of the rest, if needed. We don't live in a high crime area, but I follow the line of thinking that these days anything can happen anywhere.

I think you are in need of Another Akita now -- Get a female & she can sleep downstairs with your girls ... Place baby-gates across the top & bottom steps, then your GSD can sleep upstairs Problem solved !!!

Well I did love our Akitas...
The only reason I went with a GSD this time is that I was leery of the independence that Akitas can have. We had ours pre-children, now with 4 kids I wanted a dog that could be trained well, and that would trust me to handle situations that the dog could perceive as problematic.

Thanks to a plethora of Leerburg articles & videos, my Akita proved to be Quite EASILY Trained -- She had a very stable temperament to begin with, was utterly fearless & loved all children we encountered anywhere ... The only downside was her Dog-Aggression toward strange canines, but she would unfailingly Obey my Commands of "leave it / behind me / down-stay" and could be taken out among other dogs without incident, whether onlead or loose wearing an ecollar
However, I also waited until my own sons were adults before getting an Akita, so I do appreciate your sensible concerns -- Owning one is a Serious (fulltime) Responsibility to be sure !!! (But the same could also be said about having a GSD or whatever "guardy" breed, including my Dobermans.)
