HI everyone. I have another question. I have decided to feed Kane Raw once a day and Kibble for the other feeding. Well I have switched to Royal Canin puppy, and will then swith to Royal Canin GSD formula when hes older. Well if some of you remember... Kane was on Iam puppy and he had pudding poop. And everyone has told me to switch gradually to avoid upset. Well does that still apply if the Iams is giving pudding poop?
Kanes poop is still pudding poop (although a little firmer) but I was wondering if I could use the pumpkin to wean him into the new stuff. To me it seems as though hes going to have pudding poop whether I switch gradually or cold turkey since Iam is the upset. So do you think it would work if I use pumpkin every day and slowly wean the pupmkin out? I am almost out of the Iams and would hate to have to buy another bag of crap if its not helping him adjust.
Now when I feed him raw of course his poop is fine. But for certain reasons I can only do Raw for one feeding for now. Maybe do raw mostly and wean in kibble? Any suggestions helpfull. My biggest problem is Kanes food right now. I need to get his poop firm!
Royal Canin is the the best stuff I can get in my town. Now he was fine on the cheap Purina Puppy Chow. Do you think Im going to have to start from scratch? Would that even help? If I went back to Purina and then to RC again? I hate to keep changing so often on him! I woke up this morning to pudding poop on the outside of his crate and on the wire door again. Maybe if I feed Raw at night instead of morning at least he wont have a night time accident. Geez I just dont know what I should do to fix this. Maybe go to nothing but Raw for a week and then introduce the RC? PLease any help out there!!???

Chastity, why cant you switch entirely to RAW? I had the same problem with my puppy, when he came home from the breeder, who had him on kibble, she recommended i switch gradually to raw. So i feed him RAW in the morn and kibble in the afternoon. Pudding! So i dropped the kibble and for a week i fed only RMB and then went to the complete RAW diet there after. Since the switch he has had small firm stools and looks great!

Well Brian, IM not sure if this is a good enough reason. But I run a daycare from home. Honestly I have no room in my fridge! I barely have room for
what raw I do feed him. Now if it was possible to have a second fridge or freezer it would be no problem. Now I know I could go to the grocery store every day but its very hard. My kids leave at 6:30 in the evening and then I have to make dinner for my family and clean up after dinner, manage to get in a walk for Kane, and then get my kids ready for bed. Id hate to have to run to the store everyday. I guess if nothing else will agreee with him then I will have to, but if I can get his diet ok with one raw feeding a day for now then I will try. But if nothing seems to work them I guess my neighbor will be storing Kanes raw food! LOL J/K But yeah it would be nice, but I try to train/ excersize/play with him as much as possible in my free time. I can play with him at home, but I obviously cant leave my kids during the day to get his walks out of the way before evening.
Also what is RMB? Just seems like he was fine on the Purina crap and I didnt want him to be on bad dog food. Someone told me I should Give him boiled rice and hamburger for a few days and slowly introduce him to the RC again. Geez I just dont know which way to go!

RMB = raw meaty bones (necks, backs, etc.)
i got one of these:

it's pretty reasonable, and i go to store once every 3-4 weeks.
just thaw out enough a day or two ahead of time.
good luck.

I think one of the issues with feeding a mix of raw and kibble is that the carbs digest better at a different pH than the meat. So the dog's stomach does not know WHAT to expect if you flip back and forth. For a kibble, the ingredients on Royal Canin lood as good as any other premium kibble. You may want to see if there is something in the Royal Canin that is NOT in the purina puppy chow -- perhaps there is an allergy and there is some other alternative.
This is also mentioned in the articles on the other raw topic that is currently up on feeding once a day.
I dont have much freezer room and with two dogs just swing by the store every other day. With a day care in your home you want to be especially diligent in regards to salmonella! Not for the puppy but the kids!!! I wipe my counters with a bleach or alcohol solution that sits for 10 minutes after working with the chicken.

How much kibble are you feeding him?
I've noticed that if I give my dogs too much at one meal they sometimes get pudding poop when they go to the bathroom the next time.

I switched my dogs from Iams to Nutro 2 weeks ago, and they seem to be doing better on the food. I happened to run into the Nutro rep as I was buying my 2nd bag of food and she gave me some literature and told me that it can take several weeks to see noticealbe improvement when swithched to new food. I've seen several other posts from you regarding diet changes and pudding poop. My question is are you giving these food changes enough time to work? It sounds like you expect immediate results and so you keep switching his food. If that is the case I don't think you'll ever get rid of the pudding poop.

In terms of widely available, inexpensive, commercial food I was pleased with Nutro and would probably still be feeding it had not one of my dogs had a grain allergy.
My first GSD ate it almost every day of his life (and that was went Nutro was NOT widely available) and lived on to 15 years of age.

I fed raw only so far today and hes been fineI feed him 1 1/2 cups per feeding, and since doing one raw feeding, I feed him just once with 1 1/2 cups. Kane was on Iams food for almost a month... 3 weeks going on 4 when I changed him to Royal Canin. Iams gave him pudding poop all along. As for RC, your saying it could take several weeks... so does that mean I contiue to give it to him and just let him poop? Cant be good for the poor guy. I fed him some chicken wings today in the morningand hes been fine, and wll feed him raw again tonight instead of the RC. Maybe he will be ok, but I would like to be able to introduce him to the RC with no pudding poop. So like I said not sure if I can just use the pumpkin to wean him, or if I can just raw feed him and slowly add some kibble and how much I should add?

If you are going to feed raw I think you should 86 the kibble altogether. If you are going to feed kibble, I would feed kibble and not add raw. I endured 3 years of loose stools before I dove into raw and never looked back once i saw the difference. But I also did my research first and read Billinghurst and Pitcairn and oh the one I gave away that was too much work......There are good books recommended on the site I would order them.
Some pumpkin during the transition would be fine but may not be needed.
Get a book. Read Eds page. go to rawdogranch. and you should be fine.
