I just got a GSD puppy this past Friday(8 weeks old) and he as only eaten maybe a cup food since I brought him home. When I have him out he want leave my side and when he dose go the food bowl he may take 2-3 bites out of it and walk away and lay down by me. He doesn’t seem to have the energy he had at the breeders and at first I thought this might be that he was up all night screaming but the past two he has been quit most of the night and still want eat and want to sleep. I can get him to play a little but not like I could at the breeders. Any input would be helpful.
When was his last vaccination? Has he been seen by a vet since you brought him home? If not, that would be the first thing I would do tomorrow. It could be any number of things- but lack of appetite is not a normal thing in an 8 week old pup.
His last vaccination was at 6 weeks and I was taking him to see the vet in the morning for a check up since it was the earliest time I was able to take him in.
His water intake is good and his stools were loose late Friday and Saturday but started to firm back up on Sunday. I had my wife put his food in his crate to see if he would eat while he was by himself. I will be check on that when I get home.
I got home tonight and for the first time I found him lying down in his crate. The food he didn’t eat was knocked around the crate. He ate about half the food in the bowl and drank all the water. When I took him outside he used the rest room and his stool was firm. He is going to vet in the morning and we will see what might be wrong with him.
Jim, I wouldn’t say the he is lethargic. He just doesn’t seem to want to play tug has much as he did at the breeders. I am using a different toy then he was playing with at the breeders. He plays with the cat and chases it around until the cat get tired of it and runs off. He does seem to have more energy tonight then he has had in the past few days.
Vet opt went good. They didn’t find anything wrong w/ him. Talked to the breeder this morning and was told that the two he had left waiting pick up would not eat he was around the puppies because they were wanting to be right with him all time. What he had to do was put them out side away from all distraction just to get them to eat. My wife pulled him out when she got home to use the restroom and played with him for a while and then put him outside with his food bowl and he ate all his food.
Now I can stop worrying if there is something wrong with him working with him on his puppy bite work and socialization. I am sure I will have a lot questions regarding his training as he grows and develops.
