I lost my sweet, funny and massively loving girl this morning.
We'd had a lovely moonlit romp around the fields, her and Bon charging about, while Hoots ambled along with me, I always get up hours before I need to, so I can spend lots of time with them before work, they're only ever on their own for four hours twice a day, but I miss them and fret about them when I'm away from them.
They had their breakfast, and within half an hour, she was restless, trying to be sick and drooling, then the dreaded swelling in the belly, and I just knew, bloat had claimed another one of my best friends. The vet came to the house, and she slipped away, on her own warm bed, with my arms around her.
Darling Sugs, we all love you so much, I'm going to miss you everyday, I cannot bear the crushing ache in my heart.
Harry and Kaiser will meet you at the Bridge, and I promise we will all be together again one day
Sleep peacefully, you funny, naughty, loving and precious girl, your mama is bereft.

Oh, Tracey, I'm so very sorry! My heart is breaking for you. Bloat is a horrible thing that strikes without warning, and I know you must be in shock. Run free at the Bridge, sweet Sugar. Harry and Kaiser will take good care of you.

Tracey, how awfully sad! It hurts myself a lot to read this. I've gone through the same with my cats and one dog, whom I had adopted from the street. I had her only a few weeks. She too was a very funny, affectionate, naughty girl. She died because of Vets error. I know for a long time it will be easier said than done, but keeping the memories strongly alive about Sugs will ease your pain in the long run.

Even though, you knew what you were looking at, I think it's a good time to share this video again..
It's an Akita in the middle stages of bloat. For anyone that's never seen it before, study the signs. Quick action is the only thing that can possibly save a dog from bloat - and even then, it's touch and go.
The dog in this video did survive.

I always keep a supply of Gas-X on hand (OTC simethicone) in case one of my dogs should ever need it while ON THE WAY to our nearby emergency Vet if I see any symptoms of Bloat...

Thank you immensely Kelly and Candi for those so informative links. I had no idea that dogs can die from bloating until Tracey wrote what happened to her beloved Sugar. I wouldn't have believed that it is such a frequent cause of death for dogs. I will really have to learn to keep an eye on the early signs and react quickly. So awfully sorry for you Tracey.
