Said goodbye to our beloved GSD mix, Dixon, yesterday. I adopted him along with his pal Jake (passed in 2016) from a woman going through a divorce when they were just under two years old. Dixon would have turned 13 this summer.
He developed an aggressive tumor on his muzzle that ultimately led to our decision to keep him from any further pain. I am deeply saddened that cancer took yet another elderly but otherwise healthy (pet) member of our family from us. Other than this last, he was extremely healthy, great at snuggling and an altogether happy and steadfast companion.
I took him for his last walk and he enjoyed a well-deserved meal of his secret favorites: plain cheeseburgers, fries and vanilla iced cream.

Carolyn, I'm so sorry to hear that you have lost Dixon. It's just so darned hard when they are healthy otherwise, but we are forced to make that tough decision. FWIW, I think you did the right thing in sparing him any more suffering from the cancer. Dixon had a great life with you, as did his brother, Jake. I know he will be greatly missed.

I too feel so sorry, Carolyn. I know it is a heartbreaking decision, but I'm sure you took the right one. Did he already have pains? Wonderful to read about his last walk and his favorites. I guess the for you awfully sad last moment passed very quickly for and without suffering for him,. just like falling asleep, no awareness it would be his last one.
Yes you'll be very much longing for him, it's almost unbearable. But with time going on you will also see what a wonderful life he had for many years. I wish you so much that this thought will make you soon a bit happier again.

Oh Carolyn, it's just so hard to say Goodbye to our faithful four-legged friends, and extremely difficult to make that final decision -- Of course you did the RIGHT & LOVING thing to spare Dixon from pain & suffering ... Helping him Humanely over the Bridge was your last GIFT to him in this world, and he will Thank You for that in the next one, IMHO.

Oh, Carolyn, I am so sorry. And so glad for Dixon that he had you to keep him from a bad death.
I'm thinking of you ... we all know how hard it is to make that crucial decision (the decision that spares our dear friend but causes ourselves pain).

I'm so very sorry to read this, Carolyn, you made the only decision you could, saving your boy from a lingering and frightening end. I know it's no consolation for you now, but if he could thank you, he would.
Sleep peacefully, Dixon, you have earned your rest in the sun at the Bridge.

Thanks you guys- I know you all understand how rough it is. The vet was helping us manage his pain pretty effectively until last weekend; the spark was just gone and he began having bad complications. It was a clear sign to us that it was time.
Although it's definitely not the same, I have to say I'm glad we have Greta. I think coming home to no dogs in the house would have been even harder.
