Yesterday we had guests and they got quite tipsy. I was for a while on the telefon and in betwen some idiot gave Whiskey to Socks. I was very surprised that she took it at all. I don't know how much it was, because if a drunkard says "just a little" it doesn't mean anything. I got heavily crazy, when I heard about this and told to this fool, I'll give him a definite shoe in his arse if he ever even tries to do this again.
Everyone laughed about me, said i was exaggerating, but i'm sure I wasn't. Socks fell soon asleep. She was even snoring and twitching with all four paws. I wanted to call the Vet, but couldn't reach him. They all just laughed and said, she would have a simple hangover, like people can have.
Gladly she woke up this morning and didn't seem to be harmed. But not seem to be harmed, doesn't mean not to be harmed invisibly. How should I have reacted? Don't know how much a "little bit" (???) can be harmful.
I'm still very angry. Such jokes are not all funny. I've got issues with my husband now, because in his words I overreacted and offended certain guests. But I warned him, in future I'll inject something in the glass of every tipsy-or drunken guest something which makes himself fall asleep and paralyses him to commit such idiocities. Here everyone has to respect my rules what concerns the dogs
Your opinions? I don't know exactly how harmful alcohol is for dog, but I know we should never give them.

Personally, I'd be furious. I pretty much doubt that this guest would be invited to my home again.
That's just my personal feeling. I don't tolerate people doing things to my dogs.
"Just a little" means nothing to me. No one has any right to come into my home and put my dogs at risk -- any level of risk -- as a joke.

I would have kicked them all off my property, and they would never set foot on it again.
Stupid thing to do to any animal, but a friendly and trusting dog? Utterly unforgivable.

Actually, that says it well for me too, Tracey.

I totally agree with Connie and Tracey. None of us knows how much your dog ingested, and thankfully, it seems no harm was done this time. I think a smaller dog consuming the same amount may have been in trouble. I'm sorry you and your husband do not see eye to eye on this, but I, too, would have a zero tolerance policy for such a "guest." I wonder if that same guest would think it funny to give alcohol to a child?

Totally AGREE with Christina and all the other posters above !!! Drunken brawls (my term for booze-ups) are NOT good for anyone, least of all Children or Animals -- That stupid Jerk would've been thrown OUT of my home & would Never be welcome there AGAIN

Ditto with everyone above.!
I don't allow anyone to give my dog even a treat without my permission.
Giving one alcohol would put me over the edge and I ain't such a nice old granpa when that happens.
Your dogs, your rules but you would think something like that wouldn't even be needed to be defined.

Nothing makes me more angry than someone messing with my animals. I would have gone all Hulk on him and he would never be invited to my home again.
Period.

I said to my husband the other day: "How entertaining to watch a dog swaying, and stumbling over his own legs. It can't have been so little Whisky."
Answer: "Look, you can see now, that nothing at all happened to Socks and you must see that this guest was drunk."
"Is this an excuse? He was still able to hold his glass and to remember his way to the pissoir all ten minutes, So he should have been able to remember and hold on to our rules."
Apart from this those drunken brawls ( ) all knew before, that this is forbidden here. Like Bob I don't allow to anyone to give a treat without my permission and even this happens extremely seldom.
I then insisted that he reads some articles and today I showed him your answers. He also read your link, Connie, really an eye opener! Wow, all this finally made some impression! He even hesitantly agreed that the jerk ( Candi I'll remember your terms for ever!!! ) will have to read the articles and all your answers in my presence, Then I'll expect a credible apology based on insight. This will be the entry to be paid for a next visit and then I'll keep an eye on him without interruption.
Thank you all so so much for your support!. I'm very relieved about your unanimous opinions. I was already unsure if I had been too furious and unfriendly.

Christina, in your first post, you said that Socks went to sleep. Now we're hearing that he was "swaying and stumbling." That is even more alarming. If these people ever come back to your house -- and you know how we all feel about it, but it comes down to a decision between you and your husband -- I think you should not allow any interaction with the dogs. Put them in their crates or in a different room. Be aware of everyone's location at all times and don't let them anywhere near the dogs.
