I've been on here a bunch of times to post about my pup. We've had some poop and food issues, most of which we've been able to resolve or at least move in a positive direction.
Recently we had a bout of diarrhea, so I put him on boiled chicken & rice while we got him through that (it's resolved and everything there is fine). My husband and I, however, both noticed that what looks like whole rice pieces in his stool. I've had concerns that maybe he wasn't digesting the food (all natural kibble) properly because he seems to poop out as much or more than we feed. The rice thing seems to echo this issue. We just switched to a new kibble and the volume of his stools already seems to have decreased slightly, although it'll be a couple days before we can really start seeing any true change (if any).
Does anyone have any thoughts on this? What might cause him to have trouble digesting the food. He's gaining weight on schedule as far as we can tell, so something is getting in there. Is there a way to tell if there is a digestion issue?

Has the puppy been wormed lately? It could be undigested rice but it could also be worm segments.

Yes, he has - after I posted that I thought maybe I should've clarified that. It's definitely rice and makes up the bulk of the stool volume. He had every kind of worms there is when we first got him (apparently the wormer the SPCA uses isn't broad spectrum), so we treated for them and he's also on Interceptor now which treats for several types of intestinal worms in addition to heartworm.

Make sure the rice is fully or overcooked. I would even mash it up to make sure it is overcooked.
You may also want to talk to your vet about pancreatic insufficiency if he's not digesting all of his food and has extreme volume of stool.

I had thought about mashing up the rice - I will definitely do that if I ever feed chicken and rice again.
He is now on a (new) all-natural kibble and seems to be doing well, although we're back to lots of BMs a day - we're up to 5 today and it's only 2:45pm.
My husband reminded me today, "Haven't you ever taken care of a baby?" I work with kids, many are babies and I went, "Ohh, good point." Anybody know when the pooping slows down? 6-7x/day still seems like a lot....

How old is the puppy? It does sound like he is having quite a number of BM's even for a youngster. You say you've put him on 'new' all natural kibble... can I ask what brand? What are the main ingrediants? How long has he been eating this food? How much are you feeding him? Your husband may be right, I usually call puppies poop factories...

He was on Chicken Soup, but I decided to switch from that to one that I could feed less of (less in, less out). He's now on Innova puppy - ingredients follow:
Turkey, Chicken, Chicken Meal, Ground Barley, Ground Brown Rice, Cottage Cheese, Tomatoes, Sunflower Oil, Chicken Fat, Natural Flavors, Flaxseed, Potatoes, Herring, Apples, Carrots, Alfalfa Sprouts, Egg, Garlic, Chicory Root Extract, Taurine, Vitamins/Minerals, Viable Naturally Occurring Microorganisms
He is 4 months old - he's only been on the new food for a couple days, so I know it'll take a little longer for him to adjust. We're up to 6 BMs today and he'll still go out one more time before the end of the night (we'll see). He's getting 2-2/3 c per day, plus some healthy treats - he's probably going to be 80-100 lbs full grown.

Sounds like a good food. I agree, give him a couple of more days on the food before getting too concerned on the frequency as long as it appears to be healthy.

what breed is he?
Innova makes some AWESOME kibbles. If he is a large breed, however, some argue that the puppy food may have too much protein and calcium, which can cause some growth issues.
Also, what you are seeing is exactly what you think it was--rice. Dogs do not have the enzyme amylase (sp?) which allows better digestion of grains, vegetables, etc.
I know some people really hate the idea of doing it, but have you thought of switching to RAW? Many dogs do very well on it and I have found it is cheaper than kibble. All it takes is about one hour every 3-4 weeks to prepare the veggies and a little time to go get the meat--thats it.
I am feeding my 10 week old presa a RAW diet and he is doing great. He is thin, developing well, and only has 2-3 BM's day. They are much smaller when he does have them as well.
If you are interested, I can point you in the right direction for sources of info on RAW diets.

Ditto what Joseph said.
I think I remember reading a previous post from Rebekah where she stated her concern about the risk of Salmonella and E-coli in relation to feeding raw food. That was a concern of mine as well but never-the-less I began feeding raw to my dogs some time ago and have seen nothing but positive results. Has anyone ever heard of a dog getting salmonella or e-coli?
