I was tracking with my GSD (5 month) this morning and today he stoped on the second leg and showed no more interest to track. He did not try by himself to continue and I didn't give him another command because he always kept the nose down and tried by himself to find the food what I put on the end of the track. I watched him for a while standing there with no interest and and then I took him off the track and put him in the car without reward.
NO TRACKING - NO REWARD.
Am I on the right path or should I 'help' him to finish? Any suggestions?
I started with food in each footprint. I now place food random in the footprints and he did really well. I only had to use 'such' at the scent pad and hold the lead. He circled now and then at the corner but other than that he tracked good to the end.
You mean Captain Correction wouldn't prong him down the track?? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> Sorry, just jerking your chain!
I wouldn't have quit on that note tho. I would have tried to redirect him back into the track, as a last resort pointing and/or dropping a new piece of food in a footprint to jumpstart him. If he would track a short distance further on his own, I might have reached ahead of him and dropped a small jackpot on the track to finish it on a good note and then leave. What is the average space between your random food drops, SchFan?
I place the food about every 6', 8' or 10', and then maybe 1 hotdog in the next 3 steps. So that the dog doesn't know where he can expect food.
What I understood so far and I will do is that if it will happen again that I try to motivate him somehow (food, pointing to ground and 'such' command)and let him finish the track. I've never force tracked and I rather have him otherwise motivated. I will correct him though later with a 'NO' or 'Pfui' but I don't want to put pressure on him at this age. I'll try also to get him more hungry.
Thanks
Definitely leave the NO or Pfui out if he's having motivational problems. That won't help. A change of food or even putting a toy at the end (hidden) can help keep them interested if they need a boost.
