I couldn't possibly have said it better, Candi. All Creatures is WAY up there for me --- it's at the top of more than one mental list.
I loved reading it (and, like Bob and about a zillion other people, re-read it regularly) and I loved the BBC series.
I'd be thrilled if it started up again on TV tonight! And when I saw the title here on Leerburg, in posts by Candi and Bob, I went searching for the book and put it on top of my pile of "next to read."

Hopefully I can dig up the series on YouTube.
I've found a ton of old movies on there so maybe!
"Late 70s. early 80s" I don't think I saw much TV. I was probably at one or another dog training club or in my garage building another car.

I've certainly heard of the books. I did not realize there was a TV series. I have to confess, though, I have never read/seen any of them. I have made it a goal recently to get back into reading on a regular basis, something I used to enjoy very much but had gotten away from doing for a variety of reasons. I have a long list of books I want to read, and I am planning to put these titles on my list, and maybe see if I can find the TV shows either online or on DVD.
One question. Where do these rate on the tearjerker scale? I actually avoid some books, movies, TV shows about animals because I'm extremely sensitive to stories of their suffering. I can't seem to detach myself and find that I just can't shake the sadness for a long time afterward.

The TV series ran & has re-run a few times on PBS -- The shows are billed as "comedy" but they are also serious and have some tearful moments (as they're based on real-life people, animals & historical times) -- You won't regret reading any James Herriot books ... And this TV series is the BEST

I agree with Candi that there are a few tragedies and sad parts ... but no more than there would be in a life like the author's (it's all true, of course). It's mostly funny and fascinating, and occasional sadness just fits.
The focus is definitely not on sadness or loss.
I loved that series. It has been a long time since it was re-run, and boy, am I ready! Meanwhile I'll re-read the equally wonderful first book.

Connie, you can treat yourself to a New Year's gift by ordering the whole series in a DVD set through the LINK above -- It's a LOT of "bang for your buck" and YOU are well WORTH that small cost, my friend

Believe me, I thought of that! I also checked Netflix, Amazon Prime Streaming, Hulu, and more.
I don't have a DVD player because I have DVR.
I suspect that sooner or later it'll return to Prime or one of those. I'll just keep my eyes open!
You know, it's funny, but I love the book (I love the first book best) and the series equally. Usually, to me, books are better .... and once in a while the series is. But with this one, I get tons of enjoyment out of both. The series is extremely faithful to the books, but each venue provides its own type of enjoyment.

Ps-s-s-s-st, you can buy a DVD player for $30 and probably less, if you shop around (just sayin')

Thanks, Candi and Connie, for the comments in response to my question. Connie, there's no reason you can't have both a DVR and a DVD player, is there? I have both and get a lot of use out of both of them. I don't have Netflix, Hulu, or any of those streaming services due to slow internet speeds in my area, but I have a good-size collection of movies and old TV shows on DVD, enough to keep me occupied when there's nothing of interest on my satellite TV service. (250+ channels and often nothing to watch!) Oh, and I still have a VCR, because some of my collection is on VHS tape.
