I read and watch different videos that say micro prongs are thebest for dogs. However the one on this site is for 9 inch neck so I would have to order lots of links. The other option would be like the black stainless steel (or any of the other ones for that matter) and order a small. I am worried about the links being to bulky too.
I have a female German shepherd with a 16" neck. I am using the michael ellis training videos so that is how I would be using the prong.
Do you guys recommending the micro and getting links or get the small?
I prefer the small prong with my Mals and GSD, but it’s just a preference. The smaller the prong, the less effort you need to put into a correction. We refer to it as “more pinch per inch.”
A micro prong would be more of a finishing type of collar- to get the dog into correct position for heeling, and that type of work. If it’s the dog’s first prong, I would not use a micro.
If you get a micro, price out the extra links vs getting 2 collars. It’s always nice to have an extra chain and extra links - those little links do get bent with regular use, even if they are stainless steel.
I don’t feel the links on a small prong are bulky at all - you can barely see it on my short coated GSD.
If in doubt get them both and try them both out and return the one you don’t like. Leerburg is pretty good about returns.

Yes I also use the "small" link prong when training my 65 pound Dobie bitch AND my male Doberman (think he's around 80 pounds now) -- For just going out & about, I use the Keeper Collars with hidden prongs built into their cover fabric, and that works fine ... My dogs are both PETS so I don't train for extra-precision, just for good manners & basic obedience.
