Picnics and fireworks marks the traditional celebration.
A pause to reflect on the cost of the celebrations... The sacrifices, the courage, the heritage that requires taking responsibility and constant vigilance.
Freedom is fragile. It isn't free. It isn't in the first instance personal, rather it is collective, for we are either all free or none are.
243 years are but a blink of the eye of time.
Now to get ready for a celebration of how grateful I am, and we all should be

Well said, Mike. I agree we should all be keeping in mind the reason for the celebration, the sacrifices made over these last 243 years, and the constant vigilance needed to keep our hard-won freedoms.

Even I as foreigner know more or less the background of your great federal holyday.
What I don't get: As far as I know the declaration of Independence happened July 2. Why do you celebrate July 4?

To answer your question, the The Continental Congress didn't finalize and approve the wording of the Declaration of Independence until July 4, 1776. (They had worked on it for a couple of days.)
