I've been a bit out-of-the-loop here, so don't know if I missed some News, but have been wondering about any Updates on the expected four-legged addition to Good Ol' Bob's household -- My only K9 news is that Adobe my female Doberman has gone "Full Native Wyomian" in that she wants to STAY OUTDOORS even in the Ice & Snow when it's 16 Degrees Below 0 !!! Adonis my male Dobie & Bowie my Pitbull are much more sensible, wanting to come right back inside after tending to their business, LOL ... Adobe is the Guardiest one among them & always thinks she needs to Protect our Property from SOMETHING

Maybe Adobe is protecting you from snow!
Bob mentions Quincy's pending arrival (a couple of months ago) in the thread called POPPY, on page 1 or 2.
Quincy did arrive as expected, and the last I read, he now weighs 29.9 pounds (and was 4 months old this week). I'm thinking that was on Facebook, so we'd better encourage Bob to post here too!

If I saw that, it must have been followed by Brain Freeze on my part, LOL -- Meantime we need More details on how Quincy & Bob are getting on now (I don't do Facebook) ... My experience with Standard Poodles from back in the 60s & 70s is all about what athletic, Brilliant, and WILLING workers they are

I have semi-permanent Brain Freeze.
I did send a message to Bob on FB, linking him to this thread.
Yep, I think Standard Poodles are still exactly as you describe!

I don't do Facebook, either. I, too, have been wondering about Bob's new addition, and I hope he will post here soon.

Thank you Connie! Doing good.A little short term history. Two days before I was to go to Quincy Ill I had health problems so the wife and one of my daughters went to get him. This was Dec 6th. I missed that 6-12 week period working with him because of the health issue. Had surgery Jan 11 and finally doing well now so its gently back to dog training. He just turned 4 months old and 30 lb this past Tuesday . All training is with reward based markers. Wife did help me with his recall from the start and his recall is outstanding other then a sloppy front but that will come. Again, because of the wife he had an excellent potty bark to go outside by the time he was 12-13 weeks old. He hasn't had a mistake since then. CLARIFICATION Puppies and dogs don't make mistakes. People do and I'm guilty of that. His sit stay is at the point where I can sit him and walk around him or walk 5-6 ft in front of him now. At this point in training I ALWAYS GO BACK TO THE PUPPY to mark and reward. Calling the puppy/dog to you in the beginning sit stay can easily lead to the dog/puppy anticipating the recall and, trying to please they will come before you call. Again, that anticipation is a handler fault NOT the dog/puppy. Another handler mistake that I created. Quincy is the first house dog I've had since my son took our JRT with him when he bought a house 13yrs ago. We still had two working line GSDs and keeping my wonderful wife happy they were outside dogs. Last GSD, Trooper left us in May at 13 1/2. We decided on a non shedding dog. Had two Kerry Blue terriers back in the 80s into the 90s. My male was the top winning Kerry Blue in AKC OB in 83 I believe. My Female earned her CH in the breed ring a few yrs later. The Poodle came up because of the non shedding. Wife wanted one of those little yappers, I wanted a Standard. Wife gave in.I love her to pieces and she's always supported my dog habit. After 53 yrs married we still are best friends. Go figure. I got lost here. The house breaking went great. At 12-13 weeks old he was barking to go out BUT, Quincy is playing us with all the snow and cold this past few weeks. We don't want to ignore him when he's at the door barking to go out so we let him out EVERY time knowing all hill do is make one little squirt and then does the zoomies, diving head first in the snow. I do all his grooming and even with very close face, feet ears and belly he seems to have no common sense in the 0 degree weather so we call him in after 3-4 mins. He gets on the treadmill behind me but hes growing to fast and i have to convince him to get on their alone. Only for a couple of mins at this age but I want him understanding it. Also working on two from feet on the box. This will come in handy when he starts his heeling and I want a flip finish. As of Yesterday he has all his shots and weighs 30 lb. The Breeder I got him from is Morleys Standard Poodles. They breed for performance dogs. His parents and at leas one grand parent are excellent water retrievers for ducks and geese. after mid March or in April I will beging OB classes. Goal is CGC, AKC OB and whatever comes along. Herding is at the front of the to do list but, depending on what my Herding Mentor, Terrasita Cuffie says it may be with a little more maturity. For those that haven't been her forever like some of us one of my last two GSDs, Thunder was first trained in SAR with live find, HRD, boat work and article search. He also had his AKC CDX, HT, his ATTS TT title and his SCH III title. All marker trained. At 75 I'm going as far as I can with Quincy. I have to many hobbies but dogs will always be first and its quite possible Quincy could be my last dog because no more 2-3 sometimes four dogs.

Bob, that is all wonderful news about Quincy! I'm sorry to hear you were having some health issues, but thankfully it sounds like you are well on your way to being recovered. Quincy sounds like a perfect dog for you and your wife, a non-shedding house dog/companion for her, and an intelligent, trainable (possibly competition) dog for you. Win-win. Not to mention Quincy won the lottery, too, coming to live with your family.

Bob, this is wonderful training detail that I've missed here so much -- so great to have it!
"His sit stay is at the point where I can sit him and walk around him or walk 5-6 ft in front of him now. At this point in training I ALWAYS GO BACK TO THE PUPPY to mark and reward. Calling the puppy/dog to you in the beginning sit stay can easily lead to the dog/puppy anticipating the recall and, trying to please they will come before you call. Again, that anticipation is a handler fault NOT the dog/puppy."
That's such a good pointer.
Throughout, that great von Stephanitz quote (which I first heard from you) shines through:
"Let the trainer examine himself when the dog makes a mistake, or does not understand the exercise, or fails in obedience, and let him ask 'Where am I at fault ?' "
I agree with Cheri that Quincy won the lottery, and so did you and Marianne.

Thanks Connie and Cheri. I'd love to get action going again here on LB. So many good questions and answers here for and from many.
Yes Connie, the Von Stephanitz quote was huge the first time I read it some yrs ago. Some what of an epiphany for an old Koehler fan like me and probably what pushed me into marker training.
