Hi everybody - long time no “see”.
I’m wondering what the current thinking is on spaying females, and if you’re going to do it when is the best time. This is for a border collie / spaniel / cattledog mix, probably going to be around 60 lbs fully grown.
I’m much more familiar with males and holding off until somewhere between 14 months - 2 yrs, but I’m not sure the same guidelines apply to females. Not spaying her is also an option but I don’t necessarily want puppies, and I don’t want any drama with my other (spayed) female - I’m not sure if that would matter but mention it just in case.

Hi Matt,
This is a pretty good overview, I think.
The timing recommendations are indeed different for males and females.
Note that it agrees with the opinion of many vets that one should not wait until after the first or second heat (because that can increase the mammary tumor risk), but still urges that she reach six months before spaying.
You'll see the timing challenge in the second half of the section headed When should I spay my female dog?

Thank you Connie. I figured you’d have some good info!

If we are able to allow female dogs to get as old as possible, but manage to spay them just before their first heat, this would seem like the ideal situation, but it is tricky to predict when that first heat will be.
— That’s the tricky part. Maybe since she’s medium-sized, around 8 months is best?
