Okay, I'm on the BARF bandwagon now, have ordered the kelp and alfalfa from Ed, and found a great poultry place that supplies kennels, breeders, and police K9 trainers 5 min. from my house (cheep too! ).
My question is....(I did search the site already)
I have ordered Flaxseed oil 1000mg capsules of high lignan oil and Salmon oil 1000mg capsules of guaranteed wild sockeye salmon.
How much would a 50lb dog get (10 years old in April)
1 capsule of each once a day, or alternate days...1 day flax....1 day salmon.
I also ordered Ester-C Supreme powder (+polysaccharides and bioflavinoids) and plan on giving him 1/4 teaspoon with his evening meal. He's already on a glucosamine/chondroitin/msm product that includes Vitamin C plus I include citrus fruit, peppers and sometimes cantalope in his veggie mix.
As always....waiting with baited breath for replys.
I give my pup Salmon oil 2X daily (1000 mg. each capsule). I did start off on flax seed oil but read that some barfers feel that this oil is not as easily absorbed/digested as fish oils.
Avoid peppers, onions, tomatoes and other nightshade vegetables. My pup also tended to scratch a bit with higher concentrations of starchy veggies and the alfalfa, so these are down to a minimum. I feed my dogs fruit as a treat, like out at picnics, but also keep this to a minimum due to the high sugar content. I'm still learning and absolutely agree with this diet.
Avoid all veggies/fruit that are acidic. The acid will kill the flura in their tummy and they won't have the bacteria the need to digest properly (it ould be like you eating raw meat)! Also be wary of the vit C. Only give to bowel tolerence - meaning when they get diarrhea you have given too much. As far as the oils go, 1 a day of each shoulde be ok. It will help if you puncture the capsule, don't just drop the pill in the food b/c since dogs have a shorter GI tract food and supplements don't stay in for very long. You should crush/spinkle/break/puncture all of your supplements to increase absorption and guarentee that your pup is getting the most benefit.
If you are going to feed Flaxseed Oil get the seeds and grind them fresh. The oil in the capsule has already peroxidized and isn't beneficial. I would just use the salmon oils for the dogs...
