Ed and Kevin believe that alot of the KNPV Mals are Prey dogs that lack the nerve for real police work. How have you seen the quality of the NVBK Mals in comparison? Do you see much Genetic differences? I know that they breed for a better genetic bite than KNPV do. Do you find there to be better nerves? More civil drives? I have heard that the breeders in NVBK look for Drive, Nerve with aggression. What are your observations having seen theses dogs. I have not seen them, only heard.

I think you misquote me. KNPV produces a lot of very nice police dogs, but like any other titled dogs you need to look at any candidate for police work and evaluate it to be sure that the motivations behind the work are suitable for police work. In fact I think of all the training diciplines the dogs that are bred from long lineages of well known KNPV producers probably give the highest return of police service dogs.
Now in regards to the NVBK, the dogs are often much calmer (nature vs nurture?, I feel it is both). The dogs in the NVBK are big prey dogs in respect to the way they are worked and they are pushed not so much by the helper but by the environment. Very very much emphasis is placed on the grip, but since the helper puts little pressure on the dog while on the grip the test is a little different that in many other disciplines. This is not a qualitative assesment of the dogs, just an observation. I have had good luck applying dogs of popular Ring sport lineage in police work, although most have been young dogs that haven't any experience other than somne shaping in regards to grip work.
Thanks for the feedback Kevin. Sorry for the misquote. With all the work the NVBK has put into setting up their registery, and with their good intentions to improve the working abilities of their dogs I was interested in whether they had achieved their aims in improving the working abilities of their dogs compared the other Mals from different programms.

I don't know that the little experience I have in watching and training with some of the Ring folks in Belgium would allow me to answer that. I have met the president of the NVBK and Ed can contact him. Maybe Ed could get him on the Board to answer such questions.
