I have a 14 month old Rottweiler that I am training in both AKC obed and Schutzhund. We are getting ready to try for our CD and BH in April. I have been told by people at my schutzhund club that if I want to do really well in schutzhund, expecially the protection, then I need to wait on getting his AKC titles. They are saying that the stress of being in an AKC ring will hurt his drives. He has a lot of potential for being a really good schutzhund dog and doing really well in AKC. I am having a hard time understanding the reasoning for this.
My question is.....can you train a dog for AKC and schutzhund at the same time and still maintain the drives needed for protection work?
The people in your schutzhund club are wrong. If you train in drive it will not hurt anything. If you train with compulsion and very little drive it will not play well in AKC or in Schutzhund. Sounds like you are listening to people who have never trained in drive
Thanks Ed. I am new to the world of schutzhund, I just got involved last Oct. I thought maybe there was something I wasn't understanding. My dog has tons of drive right now. I think he was born with a lot of it and I managed to build some through play wihtout knowing that I was doing it. I'm still a little fuzzy on the difference between compulsion and drive training. I use food and toys(balls & tugs) to train him. I am moving away from the food since his food drive isn't near as strong as his prey(toy) drive. I spend a lot of time playing tug-of-war and fetch with him, have his whole life.
Sharon, someone in your club is giving you bad advice. You can compete in both sports, but most people will lose some points from the difference in your hand positioning during heeling. There are also some differences in when you are allowed to give heeling commands during change of pace that can be confusing switching between Schutzhund and AKC Obd. You will need to make a choice regarding in which sport you want higher points in, and just stick with AKC or Schutzhund style handling. Smile and enjoy it- I loved in the past being able to say that my work dogs had both a Schutzhund III *and* a UD <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
